Bridge of UNSC Autumn-class heavy cruiser Dauntless

Captain Ryan Scott sat in his command chair with a datapad in his hand, going over the maintenance of his ship. The Autumn-class was an old class going back to the post war period after the Human-Covenant War, or Great War. For such an old ship however, it was incredibly efficient, using a triple reactor system, one primary and two secondaries, that feed each other instead of overheating and wasting power in venting processes, the heat generated would be turned into energy for the coolant systems. It was a very efficient design that has withstood the test of time, even being improved upon by later designs. The Autumn-class was based on the old upgraded Halcyon light cruiser Pillar of Autumn. It's honeycomb armour structure was one of the most durable designs that existed during the war and it showed when the cruisers that had the unique design survived battles that would have crippled or out right destroyed the more modern Marathon-class heavy cruisers.

The Captain was proud of his ship. It served in the Slavery War, the Galactic Civil War, the Mandalorian War and skirmishes with pirates. It was an old beat up ship, but it kept on getting the job done when needed. This ship wasn't any old run of the mill Autumn however, it had Mon Cala shield generators in place of the old UNSC shielding. It also had mass drivers, turbolaser batteries, and ion cannons for short to mid range combat. The MAC cannon was upgraded as well, giving it a higher rate of fire and propelling the round at a speed rivaling the SuperMAC stations of the Great War, 12,000 km per second.

How the UNSC acquired the technology is simple really. When the UNSC, former Covenant Races, Mon Calamari and Quarren formed an alliance, the species of Mon Cala gave their new allies their highly advanced and efficient shielding, and ion cannon technologies. When they found the Mandalorians and they joined the OSA, the Mandos gave them turbolaser technology. It greatly benefited the UNSC, Unggoy (Grunts), and Kig-Yar (Jackals). For the Unggoy and Kig-Yar, they needed the tech to be able to stand on their own, apart from the Sangheili (Elites) and the UNSC, though they leaned on the UNSC and Sangheili anyway. The OSA as a whole allowed those in the lower castes of the Covenant to design and build their own ships that were unique. They were small and underpowered when compared to even the Dauntless, but they were making progress. For the UNSC, it allowed them to have a good defensive and short, medium and long range offensive option for situations where missiles or the MAC wouldn't work very well.

The Dauntless was on escort duty along with 5 old Strident-class Frigates. They were escorting a science team to an artifact on the edge of the system that was found on long range scans. When they reached the artifact, it looked like a purple/grey tuning fork with a large oval hole in the center that thinned down into a straight gap until it reached the end itself. It also had an antenna-like spire on the top of it. It was around 15 kilometers long as well, dwarfing the ships in front of it.

"Send in the science teams. I don't want anything being transmitted to the object, only scans of it and around it. We don't need this thing activating and turning out to be some sort of super weapon." Scott ordered.

"They're heading in sir." the comm officer said.

"Keep a close eye on that artifact. Contact the frigates and have them spread out from us, but not out of range. I want all sides covered. Warmup the turbolasers and coilguns. Leave the MAC on standby. Start a slow charge of the shields. I want us shielded in case that thing puts off any radiation." Scott ordered.

He was answered by a chorus of "Aye sir" from the bridge officers. Nodding in satisfaction at his crew's efficiency, Scott contacted the captains of the frigates and asked them to do the same thing that his ship was doing. They agreed and he saw that their shields and weapons were powering up, the shields slower than the weapons. He only hoped they were ready and nothing bad happened during this assignment.
