Ezra poured two creamers and five packets of sugar into his coffee and stirred it. He wondered to himself how he could be so lucky to go to the same college as his best friend and not even know it.
"So what's your major?" he asked her leaning back in his chair and taking a sip of his coffee.
"Psychology," she answered taking a bite of the cinnamon bun she had ordered. Gooey, white frosting got all over her face and Ezra handed her a napkin. "What's yours?"
"Psychology," he grinned. "Won't Peter be proud when he finds out?"
"Yeah," she grinned back. "He even influences us when we're not up on that mountain of his."
Daisy couldn't help staring at Ezra. He had changed so much in the three months they hadn't seen each other. He had put on some weight. After being at Horizon for two years, he had probably pigged out of junkfood when he finally got to go home. It was apparent he had been working out. There were the slight beginnings of some muscle tone. And his hair was a bit longer and curlier. He looked good, she decided.
"How was your summer?" Daisy asked hoping she wasn't prying into something that Ezra didn't want to talk about.
"It was alright," he sighed placing his mug back on the table. "My parents finally split up for good. So at least things are somewhat peaceful now. I miss them being together, but I guess it's for the better. Got my own apartment so I wouldn't have to choose between my parents." He unwrapped the wrapper on his blueberry muffin. "How was your summer?" He crammed half the muffin in his mouth and took a huge bite.
"Well," she started giving one of her cynical grins and stretched out her arms to crack her knuckles. "Me and Dad just had a fun summer together. After his last crash, he's managed to stay sober for the last six months. But when he doesn't drink, he works all the time instead. So it was basically like I had no father."
Ezra could tell she didn't want to talk about it anymore and he understood that. He felt bad for Daisy. He couldn't imagine what it must be like to live with a father who didn't really want to be a father. At least both his parents cared about him and loved him. He could give them credit for that.
One of the coffee shop waitresses walked over to their table. She's a cute girl, Ezra took note. Her chestnut brown hair was thrown up into a messy bun/ponytail and her green eyes sparkled with happiness. It was obvious she enjoyed her job. Her name tag read "Stephanie". If he wasn't still in love with Daisy, this girl would definitely have crush potential.
"Would you two like some refills?" Stephanie asked.
"Sure," they both replied pushing their cups over to the waitress.
She refilled their cups and gave them a big smile. "You two from the college?"
Ezra nodded his head. "Yup, it's our first day."
"I start school tomorrow. LA's great!" She gave another smile and headed over to the next table. Ezra looked after her for a moment and Daisy, seeing, raised her eyebrow at him. Blushing a little, he turned his attention back to his best friend.
"Have you talked to anyone else this summer?" he asked trying to cover up the little awkward episode.
"Only Shelby." Daisy added more cream and sugar to her coffee. "Guess she's going to some community college in New Mexico. Couldn't leave Scott behind, you know."
"Yeah. Those two are gonna be married someday."
The two chatted on for another hour until it was time for their next class. They figured it wouldn't be too good to miss ALL their classes on the first day of college. They promised to meet again that night. Daisy said she had something important to show him, but wouldn't say what.
