Dusty Graves
Cato's family watches as the one whom they knew would be the winner, the one who they all looked up to, was decapitated in front of their eyes. Cato's twin sister, Hestia, sees not only her brother, but her best friend, get eaten by wolves. Tears are replaced by anger, and she wants to take out her bow and shoot anything, everything she sees. Little Tores, only 7 years old, sees his role model disappear. And Cato's parents, their reaction is worst of all. On the outside, they are being calm, but inside, they are boiling with anger and sadness.
On the Victory Tour, Tores presents a bouquet of roses to Katniss Everdeen, only because he has to. Afterwards, he runs away into the woods. He finds some roses, like the ones he gave to Katniss, and smashes them with his foot. Hestia finds him in the middle of the night, asleep in a tree. She picks him up and carries him home, knowing that it was Katniss' fault that he ran away and nearly froze.
In the following weeks, Tores gets terribly sick. No one can figure out what's wrong with him, even when a capital doctor comes to see him. What's really wrong is how much he misses Cato. They spent so much time together, and now that was gone. Cato even promised that they would go to the District 2 River in the forest, the place where their parents met, when he won. Now they couldn't. They couldn't do anything now.
On a peaceful morning in November, Tores dies. When Hestia discovers this after school, she can't believe it. Both her brothers are gone. She has almost no one now. Tores is buried next to Cato, and when the tears fall on the grave, his body dissolves, and turns to dust.
His parents are torn in half with sadness. They've always loved Tores so much, and now he was gone, and so was Cato. 3 days after his death, they can't take it. They run into the woods, not caring that Hestia is alone. Later, their bodies are found next to the river by a peacekeeper, and he runs to alert the rest. When they all arrive, there is nothing but a pile of dust, and even that was fading.
Poor Hestia, with no one left, stayed in the Children's Shelter. The war begins, and even District 2 is dying with the Capital. Hestia doesn't believe that they should be siding with them, but she keeps quiet. When Katniss is shot, Hestia is in the crowd. She wants to protect her, but she played a part in both her brother's deaths. She stays behind.
Nearing the end of the war, the shelter can't keep so many children. Anyone older than 16 is sent out, including Hestia. She disappears, but soon after, dust is found scattered over her family's graves. Her bow and quiver is lying over Cato's grave, and the citizens of District 2 know that it's her. The dust is buried next to her twin.
Now District 2 uses that family as an example of the capitol's injustice. On the day that Hestia died, District 2 gets together to remember he 74th Hunger Games, the Capitol's injustice, and Cato's family turning to dust.
Sometimes when I write things like this, I scare myself. Now I like Cato so much more.
