When it's the three of them, sitting in the kitchen behind the smithy, he calls her "Elizabeth". Or, just to annoy her, "Liz". Or, teasing, with a sideways glance at Will, "Lizzie-my-love".

But when Will is gone, there is no "Lizzie-my-love". His manner does not change, but, "May I have some more of this excellent beer, Mrs Turner?"

Once she asked him why. "Because I like Will," he said. "And I liked Bill, and I like you. And I need to remind myself who you are. And what I am."

Because he knows what betrayal is.

Jack's face is grey and filmed with sweat. "You're sure you don't want a drink?" Will says. "This is the soberest I've ever seen you."

"No. I was drunk when I got it. Didn't help."

Will rolls his sleeves up, revealing a fine patchwork of pink blotches. "Scars?" Jack inquires curiously.

"Blacksmith," Will says.

Jack rolls his own sleeve up, revealing the old white scar of the brand on his arm. P for pirate. "You'll have to hold my arm still," he says. "And keep the pressure on. Even when I scream."

Will nods, and picks up the heated iron.
