The sunset blazed across the crest of the hill.
"Keladry, I know that we really got off on the wrong foot, if you see what I mean. We are the only people in the Realm to really understand what being a female warrior takes. And I couldn't help you when you needed help the most. Raoul is a good man, but..."
"I understand, Alanna. But it wasn't your fault. The King would have lost so much support if he let us be in contact with each other. Anyway, we aren't the only ones. There's Thayet, my Ma, Buri, Yuki, Shinko, Kally, even Lalasa is in the arts of - "
Alanna thwacked her with the back of her glove wearily. "Kel, I mean, there aren't any more female knights. Moron!"
"I object to that comment!" Kel said, laughing.
Alanna sighed and muttered something about spending too much time with Nealan.
"Now. Back to the topic." Alanna continued, "I think, now that we are real knights who can gallivant into the distant horizon - Kel, don't interrupt! Let me get on with what I want to say."
"I want us to spend a few years, travelling. I want you to see what I saw when it was just me. I'm getting old, and it sounds like a nice finale. Really toughen you up. That pig-sticker-" She spat mockingly, poking her in her chest, "- wouldn't save you from a real merciless fighter. And I've seen your bow shot - appalling!" The redhead grinned.
Kel gazed into space. She briefly admired the beautiful valley view, before turning her thoughts to the proposal. Almost like a second squirehood! But we'd be equals. Just us two female knights. Who knows? Maybe we can show Tortall - again - that we aren't to be messed with.
Kel repositioned herself for her arms were draped around her long legs, her head resting on her chin. Briefly overcome by the beautiful thought of being with her hero, traveling, having more adventures, she smiled, cocked her head, so she could see Alanna better, and replied,
"You know? It might just work."
