Title: Make Believe
Summary: Even security guards get lonely. Dr. Sinian/Charlie.
Disclaimer: I only play with them; I own nothing.
A/N: These are secondary characters, Charlie doesn't even have a last name in the show, but I really liked the interactions he and Dr. Sinian had in "The Pastmaker rings twice". Less action-y and romantic than it sounds. Unbetaed.
"Good night, Dr. Sinian."
"Good night, Charlie."
It's the same routine everyday, and it's been so since he started working in the museum five years ago. A tilt of his hat, a smile on her part, a wave, and then they turn, back to back. She leaves the building, and he continues patrolling it. He can't wipe the smile of his face for the rest of the night.
It is very static, their relationship, unchanging, unmoving, fixed, rigid, and monotonous. It is the way it has always been, and neither party ever makes a move to change it.
He does fantasize about it. Often. Too often.
Far more often than a married Kat with kids should. Far more often than a Kat past his prime should. Far, far, more often than a Kat with a job requiring moral integrity should.
But Charlie is just a security guard, and his life is rooted in the mundane. Sometimes he likes to pretend.
And sometimes, sometimes to break the static, he asks her about her day during his break. She then smiles, sits next to him and shares with a stale doughnut.
"Are you married, Charlie?"
She asks when their hands brush accidentally. He takes his ring off every night, first it was out of fear a hooligan would steal it, now out of fear the doctor would figure him out.
"Me Dr. Synian? Nah."
She smiles more brightly, opens her mouth and whistles.
Whistles?
Charlie opens his eyes slowly, finds the other security guard passing him, whistling a small a nonsensical tune.
Charlie is just a security guard, and his life: mundane.
Sometimes he likes to pretend. But tonight, tonight he resolves to ask forgiveness. Forgiveness, and maybe for divorce.
Unfortunately, Charlie likes to pretend.
after all, we thrive in our lies
I've never written anything for this show, even though I practically watched it since it first premiered. It's strange in English.
Reviews and/or criticisms are always welcomed.
