Disclaimer: I don't own "How I Met Your Mother" but I bet you all already knew that.
A/N: I saw the season finale and I just had to write this. The dialogue isn't exact, but you get the point. My first dive into this fandom, so please review!
"Ted told us that when he got hit, his life flashed through his mind, the things he loved." Lily said, "What flashed through your mind, Barney?"
Barney was spared the necessity of answering when Marshall jumped in.
"Boobs? Money?"
"Babes? Suits?" Lily added.
The door opened and Robin came into the room, smiling. Barney glanced up at her, and suddenly, Lily and Marshall's good-natured ribbing faded into the background.
In all honesty, Barney couldn't pinpoint the moment when he realized how he really felt about Robin. At least several weeks after his fallout with Ted. But he couldn't be blamed for that. How is a self-proclaimed man-whore supposed to recognize actual love?
At any rate, he hadn't seen any of the things Lily and Marshall where listing when the bus had hit him. There had been no thought of power suits, or his awesome apartment, or his legen…(wait for it)…dary scores. He hadn't seen flashes of Lily or Marshall or even his best friend who he thought was dying.
It had been Robin. Only Robin. With her long coal-colored hair and sparkling eyes. Robin, with that ridiculously adorable snorting laugh. Robin's hilariously lame 90s Canadian music videos. And Robin as she was right now, beaming and laughing at Marshall's joking.
Perhaps that was the moment when it had occurred to him in fullness how much he really needed her. How much he loved her.
But he was insane to think that anything could come of it. He had only just made up with Ted. Things were finally going back to normal. There was nothing he could do about it now.
So he looked away from Robin and answered quietly, with a sad half-smile.
"Yeah, something like that."
