A/N: Vivk199416, this is for your happiest moment contest! So, here it goes!
I stared at the Cabinet, my breathing shallow.
It had to work.
It HAD to work.
I opened it slowly, my chest tightening. If I failed, he was going to kill me and my parents. I still remembered what he said.
"You must succeed, Draco. If you fail, I will have to dispose of you and your family. First your mother, then your father, and then you. Do you want that to happen? Do you want to watch your parents die, and know it was you who killed them?"
And then he had laughed, a cold maniacal laugh.
The laugh of a murderer.
Shuddering, I yanked the Cabinet the rest of the way open. As I did, a small yellow bird flew out.
It was perfectly whole, perfectly healthy.
Perfectly alive.
Joy flooded through my system, causing me to yell. I yelled and skipped and jumped for joy.
I was free. I had done what he said.
I had succeeded.
Slamming the Cabinet shut, I rushed to the door of the Room of Requirement. Yanking it open, I froze.
I had to tell him. Tell him that the plan could be completed.
Slamming the door shut again, I raised up my left sleeve.
There it was.
The Dark Mark wiggled and squirmed as if it was a life. Wincing a little, I placed my wand tip directly on the mark. I felt a searing pain, so bad I cried out. But then, it was over.
I slowly lowered my wand, feeling a rush of excitement.
I had done it. I had done it all by myself, with no help from anyone.
The Dark Lord had chosen me.
Not Snape, or Bellatrix.
ME!
I wondered vaguely what Potter would think about that.
He would probably disapprove. He was all about being good, Potter was.
Scowling, I quickly pushed that thought away.
This was MY moment. MINE. I had done it. I was going to be rewarded.
I was going to live another day.
Slipping out of the Room, I rushed to get ready.
I was grinning the whole way.
Sorry it's so short!
