Here's my second entry for the Forgotton Magical Creatures Competition at the HPFC forum. This time I got cyclops as my creature, and because they are similar to giants, Hagrid popped to mind :) Hope you like it!
It's quite short, but when I tried to do it longer it turned into complete mush... so here it is, short and to the point!
Disclaimer: Harry Potter is not mine!
Hagrid stared out over the mountains. They had been there for days now, and it was hard to believe they had failed their mission.
Although it wasn't a complete loss, now they had Grawp with them. He looked back towards the cave where he could hear his half brother crashing around as he made himself at home. Olympe was in the cave above, and had just had a bit of an argument with him about whether he should be taking Grawp home at all.
He sat down and dangled his feet over the ledge. Going home empty-handed had seemed so shameful, and then, when he'd found Grawp- his brother- well, there was no way Hagrid could leave him.
There was a sudden rustling from nearby and he leapt up at once, wand pointed straight into the bushes.
He was just in time to see something, with features rather like the giants, though it was a bit smaller in size, emerging from the trees. It suddenly seemed to notice Hagrid, and it was then that he saw the single eye in the centre of his forehead.
The one eye zoned in on Hagrid's wand, then it blinked and grunted, alarmed.
"It can' be." Hagrid muttered, staring at the creature, which he was pretty sure was a Cyclops. "But yer extinct- aren' you?"
The Cyclops grunted worriedly again and backed into the trees.
"No, don' go!" Hagrid yelled out, but the Cyclops continued to back away, shaking it's head at him. It took a second for Hagrid to realise what it was trying to convey. It wanted him to leave it in peace.
Hagrid sighed.
"Guess you didn' wan' ter be foun'." He mumbled, lowering his wand again.
"Hagrid!" He turned to see that Olympe was running across the ledge towards him, wand out and worry marring her features. "What eez wrong? You were yelling."
"Oh, it's nothing, don' worry abou' me." Hagrid told her, still staring at the trees.
"Come on then, back eenside. Eet's too dangerous out 'ere." She told him firmly, sounding a little protective. He grinned; he loved that unexpected fiery side to Olympe.
"Alrigh'," But as he went he gave one last glance towards the trees. There was no doubt about it now, Cyclopses were not extinct.
But Hargid tried to shoot a reassuring smile to the bushes. If they wanted to stay secret he would honour their wishes. He knew that if wizards knew they still lived on they would never be left in peace, and he knew what it was like to be regarded as an oddity.
Please can you review? It'd make me very happy!
