CRY

Rodney's father had beat up Jeannie once, when he was nine. He hit her, over and over, swaying drunkenly, glaring at his little daughter. The incident made Jeannie curl up in a ball, trembling, but it had the opposite effect on Rodney. He launched at his father, screaming and crying. His father punished him.

Later, he crawled into bed with Jeannie, kissed her forehead, and said, "If he ever does that again, I'm going to kill him for you, Jeannie. I promise." His tears dripped onto his sleeping sister's pillow, until he angrily wiped them away.

He never cried again.
