Disclaimer: I own nothing, regrettably.

This is set during Order of the Phoenix. Just an ordinary day, canon compliant, that Jkr does not draw attention to. Enjoy. :)

I watched him as he walked towards the Gryffindor table, wondering what it was that made his forehead crease and his eyes tighten. I noticed him glance up at the top table, as per usual, hoping to see his friend. I watched the familiar look of disappointment as he realised the man was still missing. He sat down on his own, oblivious to my gaze- as he was every day- and began to nibble on a slice of toast.

I watched as his two friends came walking towards him not a minute later, exchanging a worried glance at his preoccupied expression. The girl smiled cheerfully at him all the same; the boy falling into the seat next to him, loading his plate with food.

The post owls arrived and I watched as he looked up, a faint expression of fruitless hope on his face. No owl arrived but he watched his female friend receive the Daily Prophet, casting a dark glare and the front page depicting, I saw from my own neighbour's copy, the minister for magic.

I stood up to leave just as he and his friends did, reaching the door a little behind him. I saw him rummage through his bag, a quill falling out in the process. He didn't appear to notice, so I picked it up and, for the first time in my life, I spoke to him, the boy I watched.

'Excuse me,' I called, him and the girl turned, the other boy did not hear, 'You dropped your quill,' I told him, offering it out.

He looked from my face to the quill, then back to my face.

'Oh, thanks.'

'No problem,' I replied as he took his quill back.

Our hands touched for a moment and he pulled his back.

I looked up at him; he stared back at me, a frown on his face.

I shook my head slightly and turned away, leaving him standing there with his friends.

Never again did I talk to him, never again did I have contact with my idol; the boy with the lightning scar.
