She loves him

This is what she tells herself

As she waits,

Counting the days

It is not that hard

She declares

But wonders if her life

Will go to waste

Weeks turn to months

She begins to grow numb

Until an unexpected visit

From an old friend

Who always was much more

She smiles at him politely

But her eyes reveal her pain

And he asks her

Why not stop this?

Why not walk away?

She tells him the same reason

She continues to tell herself

It is her duty and her burden

She will bear it on her own

He offers her a chance

To get out and be free

And though in her heart she longs for it

She simply cannot agree

He leaves but soon he comes again

Offering freedom for which she yearns

She declines with heavy heart again

But they both know he will return

The third time that he comes

She knows what she wants most

But something

Or someone

Is stopping her

He tells her

He is the kind of man

Who would take a bird and clip it's wings

So it can never fly away

Now he is about

To clip your wings

But you must fly away

You must be free

It is too much for her to take

She tells him

Leave, go away, and never come back

She tries to go back to counting days

But finds that she has lost track

And then she finally realizes

She is tired of living a lie

It isn't right to sit and watch

While a part of herself dies

She runs to stop her old friend

She tells him she has made her choice

And as they leave together

She feel happiness impossible to voice

For at last, she is finally free
