Prologue

Iza was a small girl when it started but she was no ordinary girl. Her hair was corse and thin and her eyes produced an unnerving glare. If you stared at her for a long time she seemed to look less and less like a human. Her eyes were faded brown and her skin was a milky ivory colour. She was only ever seen on a saturday morning down in the town centre seated at an empty stall at the market. She sat there and looked. Just looked. At everybody. At everything. People avoided her. Nobody ever asked her if she was alright or if she knew where her mummy was. People kept well away. So nobody knew if she belonged anywhere. Nobody had ever heard her voice.

By the time she was older she had become wonderously pretty. Her hair was silky black and she glowed with beauty. When people smiled at her she ignored them and they experienced a very unpleasant feeling. She could read thier minds. Not all were bad but she had no interest for any of them. Still she never spoke.

It was a saturday when it began. She was down at the market. Sat at the empty stall. Looking. She looked strangely calm and completely approachable. But nobody ever did go near. It was something in the air. She changed it. Whenever you were within a few metres of her your pulse would quicken and you would start to sweat. Youer skin would become pale and clammy. And you knew it was her. You didn't know how but you knew that it was her that was making you react. You changed direction and sprinted away.
