An Oddity Among Men

Tatl hid behind a wooden beam as her stoic partner listened to the man talk. This man was a true oddity, she mused to herself. He seemed unassuming enough at first glance; he was of average height, with shining auburn-red hair. His eyes… well, it was difficult to tell, since nobody ever really seemed to see his eyes. But he was pleasant for all that he mainly stuck to his business, even though he never seemed to venture outside of his sanctuary. Even though they never even learned his real name. What sort of man was named solely after his profession?

Of course, the green-clad little guy didn't seem to notice anything off about this collector. But then again, Tatl had come to the conclusion that the kid was decidedly dense quite some time ago, so she expected nothing less than for him to be his usual, careless self.

So it was up to her to figure out what the man was up to. He always seemed so happy… and what was up with that, anyway? It was her jaded opinion that anyone who was so cheerful all the time must have something to hide. She had seen it time and again, day after day after neverending day. He always sounded so chipper as he greeted them. He never evacuated the city, even at the very end… as if he knew they would simply be transported back through time before destruction could truly befall them. And what about the unsettling way he seemed to know things? The odd powers he occasionally displayed, even though he acted as if everything were perfectly normal?

The fairy began to flicker rapidly as she worked herself up in agitation. Granted, she was an easily agitated little thing, prone to recklessness and jumping to conclusions. But she was certain she was on to something this time. There had to be an explanation as to why this man took such a personal interest in the forest-kid's quest. Maybe he knew everything? He could be in the background, orchestrating the entire thing from behind the curtains! Did he work for some greater good? Or did he have his own dark designs? In either case, it was unsettling the way he always gave the kid that cheerful little smile and greeted him as if they were familiar companions, even on that first day when he had no business knowing who the kid was…

Even when he wore the mystical transformation masks that fooled everyone else.

Tatl was just gathering her courage to confront the man when her kid ran off, and her wings rattled and rang in alarm. She had no choice but to follow him – he was her ticket back to her brother after all, and without her he'd probably wind up dead in a ditch somewhere for being too careless.

As boy and fairy ran off into the distance, The Banker chuckled softly and went about his business as usual.
