Doors, Windows and Souls
Whoever said that eyes were windows to the soul had never met this guy. His eyes were doors, shut tight and locked. In the short time that she'd known him, she'd rarely seen him look at her with anything other than his guarded expression.
Recently though, every once in a while, he'd slip up. The doors would open, and she would get a little peek at the soul he carefully protected. Tiny glimpses, here and there, but they were enough to break her heart.
Enough to show her what he tried so desperately to hide. His desire for acceptance. His anger, the only defense against the years of hurt. Those rare times when the doors opened were enough to see, that despite his past, he wanted to care.
It gave her hope that some day, perhaps, they wouldn't be shut quite so tightly.
Whoever said that eyes were windows to the soul must have known this girl. Her eyes were wide, open windows, no curtains or screens to shut anyone out. When she looked at people, she wouldn't try to hide her feelings.
He had no idea what to do with that. Feelings were meant to be hidden and protected so they couldn't be hurt. Hers were out for the world to see. Within the span of a few moments her eyes could blaze with anger, soften with compassion, brighten with joy and fill with tears of sadness. Most difficult for him to understand, was how she looked at him. How could she, with her pure soul, offer a half demon friendship? But it was there. Every time her eyes met his, he could see that offer.
And it gave him hope, that perhaps he wouldn't always be alone.
A/N: This is only my second attempt at a fic, so I'm still trying to figure things out. Constructive criticism is appreciated, as I am trying to get better. Thanks!
