A/N: This is my first story so reviews are always appreciated. Only the second paragraph is in Lily's POV, I hope it isn't too confusing. The James in this story is a little different to the usual knight in shinning armour, hopefully it's still a story with reading.

James had always considered himself perceptive or at least when it came to her. He noticed the way her eyes glazed over when she talked to the same person for over an hour, her hands would start unconsciously detangling her hair as though they had a mind of their own and and the pouring rain outside would catch her attention. It seemed a though humanity completely bored her, but that couldn't be true, she spent hours tutoring the first years in potions (even the Slytherins) and would bury herself in autobiographies of wizards, even he had never heard of. How could someone care so much and yet not care at all?

Mankind was not meant to be understood; she knew this. Lily never endeavoured to decipher peoples actions or question their choices but never, in her 16 years of existence, had she met someone as juxtaposed as him. He scoffed the name of god and yet grasped onto hope with every ounce of his being. Cigarettes buds and alcohol bottles had no place in the boy's dorm only reckless acts in the name of heroism and bravery did. She was resigned to living in confusion over Potter.

Sunlight was impossible to come by in the harsh english winter, quidditch and scantily clad women were things James Potter could no longer hope for. The Great Hall mimicked the depressed weather outside and a distressed air clung on to the students. His eyes sought her out, Evans, she was wearing extra concealer, failingly trying to hide her puffy eyes and dark circles, her mouth was stretched into a smile but her plate was full and untouched.

He went and sat with the rest of the marauders but with his eyes trained on her the whole time. "Hey Evans did you put you make up in the dark?" he sneered "It looks like you took a shower in foundation."

"Your knowledge in makeup is astounding potter, care to come out of any closets?" she snapped back. Everyone around them could sense another infamous argument coming up and listened keenly. Remus placed a cautious hand on his shoulder "James c'mon, don't start an argument today."

"Don't interrupt the enemy Remus" Lily said" I'm sure he'll say something he will regret soon enough."

"Do you usually gaze adoringly at your enemies Evans, or is it just exclusive to me?" James replied.

"James isn't the enemy anymore Lily" said Alice solemnly and with that comment the fun, teasing air vanished and the painful events of the night before flooded into everyones minds. but he was resolute this school had enough sorrow, they needed something else.

"Yeah you're right Alice" he said "Evans your hair; now thats the real enemy"

"God Potter you are the single most unsympathetic shrew in existence" Lily yelled angrily.

"Hows that Lily?" he inquired angelically "I stopped you from being sad didn't I?"

"Do me a favour James and casually walk of a cliff" She got up and walked briskly out the hall, slamming the door behind her.

She though she would never understand him, and he though he knew her like the back of his hand.
