"And so he took me out the very next day," Buffy said admiringly to Merrick, who sat in the chair, completely bored out of his mind. Buffy continued beating the punching bag, but stopped when Merrick didn't respond, "Guess where he took me!"
"Chucky Cheese," Merrick suggested, skimming through a document from the bookshelf.
Buffy glared at him, "Seriously, Merrick. Give a legitimate guess!"
"I'm being very serious, Buffy,"
She rolled her eyes and sighed, continuing her training, "He took me to a French restaurant. A really nice one. I told him I always wanted to go there, but he finally took me this time-" a cough from Merrick gave Buffy the sign that she needed to continued the story. She walked over and sat on the corner of the table in front of him, "So we went and there was this weird violinist guy who kept looking over at us. So then, Pike nodded at him and he came over and he played this beautiful song!"
Merrick nodded, a huff escaped his lips. Buffy was disappointed by his reaction. It sucked that she only had Merrick to brag to. All her friends didn't hang out with her because she was acting different. Who else did she have? Pike? She continued her story, "So then we ate and everything was delicious and-"
"And who was this with?"
Buffy was taken back, "Pike?"
"And why did he do this?"
"He forgot my birthday, so he made it up. It was my Make Up Birthday."
"Ah."
Buffy nodded, "Yeah. I know this because Pike's birthday is two days after mine. Anyway, so we ate everything and he ordered me this delicious cake. Merrick, you should have seen it. It was huge and gorgeous. It was white with pink designs all over it. I don't know how he could afford it, but he did. Somehow," she took a breath, "And then he paid and we took a walk on the boardwalk."
"After you went out to dinner?"
Buffy sighed in frustration, "Yes."
"And he paid?"
"Yes."
"Ah."
Buffy stared at Merrick, and continued, "Anyway, he took me to the boardwalk and he played this game where you have to throw the ball into the cup and you win a prize. He won me this adorable bunny with big eyes. It was precious. Then, oh my gosh, then we walked on the beach and guess what happened?"
Buffy waited for Merrick to guess, but she found nothing but silence. She waited for a minute or so, then smacked his arm. Merrick stared at her, "Yes?"
"Guess what happened!"
"What happened?"
"You have to guess!" she sighed again, "Never mind. We took a walk on the beach and he gave me this gorgeous ring!" Buffy lifted her hand which held a large, sparkling diamond right on top of it.
Merrick glanced up at it, "Mhm," he continued looked through the book.
Buffy suddenly burst. She had let him blow her off for far too long, "Mhm? That's all you have to say about it? Mhm?"
Merrick glanced up at her, "It's very nice, Buffy."
Buffy stared at him, mouth agape, but before she could speak, he interrupted, "And this is for your birthday?"
"Yes," she said, her voice shaking with anger.
"Which he missed?"
"Yes."
"And when was this?"
"Yesterday. He missed my birthday, so we celebrated it the next day, which was yesterday," God, she was getting so sick of his constant questions-
"And when is Pike's birthday?"
"Two days after mine," Buffy froze when she said it.
Merrick continued looking through his book, "So Pike's birthday would be today."
Buffy stared at the table. Her head collapsed in defeat, a low groan coming from her throat.
Shit. She had forgotten Pike's birthday.
