Phoenix grumbled to himself as he waited on his couch. There was nothing good on TV, it was midnight after all, Maya was in bed and there weren't any cases to work on. It was gonna be a long night.

It would have been a long night if it wasn't for the sound of broken windows and a scream coming from upstairs. Phoenix jumped off the couch and shot upstairs "Maya! Are you alright up there?" he called

"I..I think s..so" came the muffled reply. When Phoenix burst into the room there was a note pinned to the bedpost by a small scythe. It read:

To Phoenix and Maya

I am inspired by your work sparing the lives of the innocent and condemning the lives of the guilty.

Meet me in Gourd Park at 12:30 tonight.

And then there was an unreadable signature. Phoenix noted the ink was red before asking Maya "What just happened?"

"I..I don't q..quite rememb..ber, " she stammered back.

"Well I think we should follow the note; last time someone got a note and didn't follow it, an innocent person was murdered!" suggested Phoenix in a manner saying that 'no' wasn't the answer he wanted. Maya reluctantly agreed and went downstairs to fetch her coat. Phoenix followed her, silently grateful that she wasn't in tears or too shocked by her near death to move.

After getting off the bus to the park, the pair moved into the gates wondering where their mysterious letter-sending friend was. As they approached the lake they saw a hooded figure approach them. Phoenix's heart sank. What was I saying about innocent people getting murdered? He managed to think this before the figure pulled back its hood to reveal a skeletal face with no skin whatsoever. Maya screamed. Phoenix fainted on the spot.
