Title: "The Price"
Author: Darkover
Rating: K
Disclaimer: The characters of "Les Miserables" were created by the great French author Victor Hugo, not by me, and I am not pretending otherwise. I am merely borrowing the characters as a tribute to his genius.
Summary: The Bishop tells Jean Valjean the real price he must pay. A parody, and a perfect drabble, regardless of what FFN may say.

The gendarmes left. Jean Valjean stood dazedly clutching the silver candlesticks given to him by the Bishop, the rest of the old man's silver—now Valjean's silver, if the Bishop were to be believed—in a canvas sack at his feet. Valjean could not believe it. Even to be spared a return to prison was a miracle, let alone to have a fortune in silver bestowed upon him.
Bishop Myriel gazed at him with stern kindness. "Now, Jean Valjean, in return, there is something you must do."
"Become an honest man?"
"Get a shave, a haircut, and take a bath!"
