Batman turned into a dog and ran far away from Gotham City. He found a nice suburban family named The Smiths. The boy, Bobby Smith, was the first to notice him, and immediately ran up to him and gave him a big hug, one filthe with love and warmth. He ran inside with his new puppy and pleaded for his parents to adopt him.

"I don't know, son, having a puppy is an awful lot of responsibility" said Mr. Smith.

"I'll make sure to feed him and get him plenty of exercise!" exclaimed Bobby. Mr. Smith chuckled and said

"Oh, alright, if it really means that much to you".

"Gee whiz! Thanks, dad!" yelled Bobby, as he and his new puppy, Sparky, ran outside to play. Mr. Smith simply shook his head, a warm, fatherly grin on his face, and returned to his paper and pipe. The next few days were blissful for Bobby, as he and his dog played together constantly. They'd run around the yard, Bobby laughing and Sparky barking gaily, and after they became tired, they'd go inside for a glass of cool lemonade made by Mrs. Smith.

"How's your new pet, Bobby?", Mrs. Smith would ask.

"Super!", Bobby would exclaim, between gulps of the smooth, refreshing lemonade. Sometimes, after some rest and lemonade, Bobby would throw the ball across the yard for Sparky. It was all a load of fun! Then, one day, a spectre appeared, something that posed a great danger to Sparky...the local dog-catcher! He hadn't seen Sparky before, and was suspicious, but Bobby explained things to him, and he went on his way, but not before giving Bobby a quarter to buy himself some candy with!

"Wowee! Thanks, Mr. Dog-catcher!"

"Anytime, Bobby! Don't eat too much sweets, though, you'll spoil your supper!"

"Don't worry, I'll just have a little licorice."

Life was grand, and Sparky, Bobby, and Mr. and Mrs. Smith were all very happy. Sparky sometimes got into trouble (he once tore up Mrs. Henderson's garden! Boy, was he steamed!), but Bobby always stood up for him. Sparky and Bobby were true pals, and they stuck together through thick and thin. One day, Bobby tried to bring Sparky to school, but the teacher, Ms. Jones, wouldn't have any of it!

"Bobby, you can't bring a dog to school! It's silly!"

"Aw, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to break the rules. My pa's always told me, 'Respect you elders and follow the rules, that's what America's about'"

"Well, I'm glad that you realize that, Bobby." Sparky had to go home that day, but Bobby learned an important lesson about trusting authority and being a moral, upstanding young man that day, so Sparky played an integral role in helping Bobby become a decent American...
