Prologue
The stones were a constant danger. Her back hurt. The palms of her paws were sore and she thanked her for bringing her climbing boots. How had she got there? Simple! Her stubbornness got the better of her. He had warned her that it was a waste of time, but every artifact was important and this one she would have to have in her collection.
"In the most remote depths of the mountain. Are you crazy?"
In her mind, the words spoke to her in irritation and worry way it was understandable. Getting to the mountain wouldn't be difficult but getting to where the intended artifact was, was an impossible mission. That mission, which for Judy was not so complicated as Nick thought. The recovery of the artifact was even easy. Too easy. The worst was when her paws picked up the little bracelet from ancient times. By removing it from the place that was not supposed to be removed, as we know, the structure of the mountain began to tremble. One quick move, and Judy stored the artifact inside the backpack, before starting to run at full throttle through the place where it had entered. However, the worst thing happened. The large, thick stones covered her only exit when they began to fall.
"Damn!"
Between her teeth, the word came out loud. Taking a deep breath, she turned back and ran, looking where she could get out of there. She would have to die one day, but not there, under the rocks.
Meanwhile, outside, the panic of Nick demanded his ideas to be in disarray. He felt the ground tremble and feared for the life of his companion and best friend. Afflicted, he wouldn't know what to do, and the only thing he was really obliged to do would be to flee from there so as not to fall along with the collapse of the ground. In a safer place, he grabbed the walkie-talkie and started calling Judy. At first, the noises were what answered him. Desperate, he hit the device if it was a problem and started screaming her name.
"Nick..." There was noise, but he could hear her. This relieved the pressure on his heart for a moment.
"Can you get out?"
"I'm... Trying?" the answer came out as a question, amidst a troubled breath.
As he talked to her, Nick looked for the floor collapse in front of him, if there was any hole she could climb through. It wouldn't be easy, but at least it would be safe and sound. When his emerald green eyes glimpse the solution.
"Carrots, where exactly are you?"
"I don't know! I just run and run and nothing!"
Frustrated, she ran endlessly along a stone path, avoiding not being hit by stones that still fall. Although the ground had stopped collapsing, beneath it the storm had not yet passed.
"I can see a small hole further ahead. Can you see any light down there?"
Sowing her eyes, Judy noticed some small rays of sunshine facing the darkness.
"Yes." She answered and accelerated the pace.
"Try to climb up there. I'll be in the top waiting for you."
Finally, the stones had stopped falling. When Judy reached little fissure, she bent forward, leaning her paws on her knees and trying to control her breathing a little. As she straightened out, she studied the small fissure. She could get through, but it would be difficult. Removing the pickaxe attached to the buckle of her waist, she strayed and entered the fissure. It was tight and would hurt her on the way up, but she wanted to get out of there as soon as possible. Her back leaned against the rock wall, her legs bent, her knees were close to her chest, her feet found support on the rocky stones in front of her. With a little effort, she raised her right arm where she had the pickaxe, fastening the firm steel tip to the rocks in front of her. Taking a deep breath, she began to climb. The sharp stones were sharp knives on her back. Her left paw was hurt as she climbed. Her knees complained of pain, but she had to get out of there as soon as possible. The climb was still a few meters ahead, and in the middle of it small stones began to fall. At first, they were few, but as they progressed more and more, they fell. From her walkie-talkie, Nick's voice alerted her to be quick, that the ground had cracked once again. Panic took hold of her and her adrenaline went into action. With a 'supernatural' force, she climbed as fast as possible. In her mind, the words repeated 'I can do it' constantly. Then, finally, the pickaxe hit the ground firmly and her left paw was raised in the air. Nick ran towards her to help her. In pulling her out, Judy did not have time to breathe, but rather to run both and go to the firm ground. When their feet landed, the ground behind their collapsed completely.
"That was close." With a mocking smile, Nick took a deep breath. He leaned his paws on his knees, trying to control his breathing.
"That's right!" Judy smiled ironically.
Her back was on fire, her paws were hurt. She would have to go to the hospital before going home, but she had recovered what she wanted. From her father's map, it was the penultimate artifact Trinity was after. What was missing was one that would be in the Mexican city, where, after being cured, she and Nick would look for the artifact and keep it safe. Whatever the cost.
