Prince Zuko is now a hero throughout the world, at least throughout the Fire nation but soon the entire world will be Fire Nation so it more or less counts. His dreams have been realized. His father recognizes him as his heir and son. His sister is less sarcastic and begins to show more respect to the boy she knows will one day be Fire Lord. He has not seen his uncle Iroh for a while, but he has received assurances that the old man will visit him one day and that he is also very proud of him.
It's only when the lights go out and the prince is left alone that he has to swallow that awful feeling chewing at his stomach and tries to block out the knowledge that he will never see his uncle again.
Sokka is dead. His body lies broken and burned in the pits of the Boiling Rock prison. He is no longer a threat to the Fire Nation. It is already written in the great records that he never was. The only testaments to his existence are the charred bones crumbling in the darkness.
Suki is also dead. Her body lies alongside the pile of dead Kyoshi warriors. In life they stood together, in death they shall not be separated.
Mai is, as always, silent and surly. Zuko is distracted by his new found glory and Azula has more important things to attend to. Her handmaids say they have never seen her smile. She knows they never will.
Toph is truly blind now. Locked in a high security prison ship, she waits silently in the metal box that has been her home for years. She stopped screaming a long time ago. All she can do is crouch silently in the darkness. The blind girl has finally lost her vision.
Katara is still alive, though her will to live has been utterly destroyed. For her crimes of aiding the Avatar she was tortured and humiliated publicly before the Fire Nation and later the Water Tribes. In sleep she dreams of her brother and of her father's decapitated head that was thrust into her face. She lives only to serve as an example to any would-be traitors. In what remians of her mind, she died long ago.
Iroh is on the run. He will never be welcomed back to the Fire Nation. Although he has run to the ends of the Earth he knows it is not far enough. One day the Fire Nation assassins will find him and they are getting closer and closer.
The Avatar lives, but barely. He is constantly monitored and always manacled and bound in the heaviest chains. It has been years since he has suffered a coherent thought since he constantly drugged but never to the point of death. He is not allowed to die, in that regard he is the safest person in the Fire Nation though he has not the clarity of thought to understand. Nobody save the prison guard have seen him for years. His only company is the darkness.
Fire Lord Ozai has recognized his father's vision. The Avatar is his prisoner and his allies are either dead or broken. The Earth kingdom has fallen and the Water Tribes will follow soon. He has created a fire that has destroyed everything and he has forged the world anew. A new world in which all land are the Fire Nation and he rules supreme. The Fire Nation has succeeded. He always knew it would.

This was a very dark story I imagined after reading a truly exellant story in the LOTR fanfiction zone about would happen if Galadriel had accepted the Ring. This is what I imagined would happen if Aang was defeated. That said I am truly glad he wasn't.
