Two hands grabbed Arthur firmly and pulled him into the shadows behind a pillar. They took his lips onto theirs as everyone called out: "HAPPY NEW YEAR!"

Once they had parted and the lights had been lit again, Arthur smiled at the woman before him: Gwen.

"Happy New Year, sire" she cheered before she bowed and left Arthur, watching her mingle her way back into the crowd, smiling broadly.


Merlin stood in front of the lake, the moonlight glimmering along the still water, as the fireworks started swirling in the sky, reflecting in the water. He had wanted to spend the New Year in the presence of the one he had loved and lost.

All of a sudden a figure rose out of the water, hooking their arms around Merlin's neck and pressing their lips against his.

The fireworks soared above the couple, casting brilliant colours against their faces.

"Freya, I…" Merlin began as they pulled away.

"I love you too, Merlin – Happy New Year" She smiled before her face turned serious, "I can't stay long, the portal is only open for a few minutes…"

Already Freya was sinking back into the depths of the lake; Merlin held her hand until their fingertips brushed against each other and she was gone.

Until next year, he thought fondly, a smile gracing his lips.
