The first thing I remember is darkness and I remember feeling afraid. Then I saw the moon and it was so big and bright, it pushed away the fear and the dark. I was able to take a deep breath of cold air and I felt the coolness of ice beneath my bare feet. I finally looked away from the Moon and took in my surroundings.
I was standing along the edge of a large pond. Towards the middle stood a boy with a tangled mop of white hair. He slipped as he took a step, but didn't fall. He was looking around when his foot bumped into a branch laying on the ice. The boy picked it up and a pattern of frost spread across the wood. One end touched the ice and he jumped as a frost pattern spread across the surface. He tapped a tree with the branch and frost started forming on the tree. He tapped another tree. When frost formed on that one he got excited and started running across the ice, the branch trailing the ground behind him, and frost appearing wherever the tip touched the ground.
I was no longer standing on the ice covered pond. I had moved onto the shore and stood in the shadow of the trees, watching the boy. Curious, I poked the tree next to me. To my delight, ice spread across the bark. Smiling, I looked back at the pond, but the boy was gone.
A yell and snow falling on me made me look up. The boy was clinging to a tree limp way above me. The staff was still in his hand and he didn't seem to be hurt. I changed my mind when he jumped out of the tree. Somehow he didn't fall to his death, and I found out later that the wind had caught him. The wind carried him away and I tried to keep up by running beneath him. I didn't want to be left alone in the dark forest.
That's when the wind caught me. I can't explain it, but suddenly my feet were not touching the ground and i could see above the treetops. I could see that there was a small village not far away and that the boy was heading toward it.
I landed outside the village a little while after the boy did. I walked around a building and watched a little boy run through the white haired boy from the pond. Confused, I walked farther into the center of the village, and got walked through as well. It felt strange and hurt when the person gave no reaction to having just walked through me. I looked up, shocked, and found the boy looking at me. We could see each other, and that meant we weren't alone.
Jack Frost and Jessica Snow. Those were our names. How do we know? The Moon told us, but that was all he ever told us. And that was a long time ago.
As months turned into years, we learned many things. Jack learned to channel his power through the branch from the pond, and while I tried many different things, I never found my channel. Instead, I used my powers freely and while that was a little chaotic, it suited me.
The winds taught us how to use our powers, and why people couldn't see us. The winds also told us how to call them and how to use them to get places.
