THE GREAT ESCAPE
By: Vanessa Sgroi
Sam Winchester's breath caught in his throat as saw his brother splayed on a cross. He silently cursed again the monstrosity that had brought them to this point and scrambled forward, desperate to get to Dean.
"Dean?" he hollered. Not so much as a twitch.
Heart racing with anxiety, Sam managed to climb up to Dean; beyond relieved to see he was tied, not nailed, to the wooden structure. Dean's wrists were bloody where he'd fought hard against the restraints. Sam stretched out his arm, brushing his fingertips across Dean's cheek.
"Hey, Dean? C'mon, man, you need to wake up." A groan sent hope soaring. "That's it, Dean. Wake up. We need to get you out of here. Now!"
No response.
"You're not gonna make this easy, are you?" bemoaned Sam. He stretched a little more and dug a knuckle into Dean's sternum. That brought his brother awake with a moan.
"S'mm?"
"You got it," Sam said has he worked on the rope closest to him. "Listen, we have to move. It wasn't too far behind me when I finally found you."
"Mmm."
"Think you can run?"
Dean shook his head.
"All right. I'll carry you."
Dean gave him the stink-eye but didn't dispute the necessity.
"Yeah, yeah. We're never to discuss afterward." The last of the rope fell away. Sam grabbed his brother, helping him down before lifting him into a firemen's carry and hurrying—as much as possible anyway—away.
They hadn't gone far before they heard a roar of rage echoing from behind them.
"Shit." Sam strived to move faster but struggled with the burden of his brother's weight.
"Sam…Sam, put me down. I can run."
"You sure?"
"Yeah."
It wasn't elegant. It wasn't graceful. But run he did. With more than a little help from Sam.
