Skulduggery heard her scream. He ran. Fire flared toward him and he dodged, somersaulting past. Bodies littered the ground, but he didn't care. Only one thing mattered at this point: her. Tanith ran past, sword flashing, to an enemy. He ignored the cries of the fallen, because if a Faceless One harmed a hair on Valkyrie's pretty little head, then all of hell would break loose and he would personally tear apart everything and anything that stood in his way.

He found her. Valkyrie was on her knees, a Faceless One stood before her. Blackness swirled around them as it slowly stole her soul from her body. Skulduggery threw himself at the fallen god, making the hideous creature stumble slightly. It turned it's attention from the girl and to the skeleton detective. Skulduggery's rage clouded all self resolve and madness took over. He threw fire and found the places where the air connected and pushed. Hard. The Faceless One barely moved. Angered, Skulduggery looked to the ground beside him, locating the Scepter of the Ancients. He ran for it, scooped it up and fired. Black lighting erupted from the crystal in its hilt. He was thrown back and the Faceless One collapsed into dust, carried endlessly away by the wind and scattered throughout the lands.

Rage ended and for Skulduggery, there was only exhaustion. He looked at the scepter. He was surprised that it had worked. Usually, it was only operatable when the previous owner was...

Valkyrie lay unmoving on the ground. Skulduggery threw down the scepter and ran to her side. She wasn't breathing. He held her close and screamed. He screamed until his voice was hoarse and then he screamed some more. She was gone. His one and only partner in crime had been fated to rest in an eternal sleep. Skulduggery picked her up and stood, walking away from the battle, where it seemed the last of the Faceless Ones were being defeated. They were winning, but it didn't matter. Valkyrie was dead. He walked slowly to the cliff and looked down. The pointed rocks that jutted from the sea called his name. With Valkyrie's limp body treasured in his arms, he jumped. His bones crashed into the jutting crags and so, our beloved Skulduggery Pleasant joined his partner and friend Valkyrie Cain once again... In death.
