Since Delphine's return from Frankfurt, she'd been quieter somehow. Life had gone back to almost normal, back in Delphine's tiny apartment, back in Toronto. And yet there was something not quite right about it.
It had only been a week, and things were off. Even though her treatments were going well. Things were, more tense somehow. Whether it was DYAD drama, or simply the end of the honeymoon period Cosima couldn't say.
For yet another evening, Delphine stared intently at the screen of her laptop. She wanted to ask what she was looking at, but something in Delphine's facial expression told her not to.
A chime sounded from her own inbox as she received another email from her Eskimo Pie. Maybe things were okay after all… kind of...
"Delphine what's this?" Cosima looked up from her email, stunned at what she's been sent.
"Real estate listing. Do you not like it? I can look at others. I thought you'd like the older building, the newer ones seem… too cold?"
"Holy shit... Delphine, this condo is like half a million dollars. I mean... What the hell?" Cosima cocked her head and raised her eyebrows, "We can't afford this... I'm a PhD student… on break from her PhD… and you… well unless you're like incredibly wealthy and have been hiding it..." Cosima lets herself trail off, fingers still swirling in the air.
Delphine smiled, "DYAD will pay... If you don't like it, we'll find another one. Downtown Toronto is expensive."
"We don't even need that much space... Two bedrooms and a den?" Cosima browsed the pictures, silently.
"The den is for the office," Delphine paused, before suggesting helpfully, "The second bedroom is for...the future? Or guests?"
"The future? "Cosima repeated incredulously, "Like babies? Or resale value? Or taking up a space consuming hobby?" Cosima stands and grabs Delphine's laptop, "What have you been looking at?"
"Cosima, wait... " Delphine tries to pull her laptop from Cosima's clutches, before giving up and sinking back down on the futon, her eyes watching Cosima closely.
Cosima's eyes widened as she examined Delphine's Internet history. "Condos, gay friendly wedding venues, wedding bands… oh my god! Is this a wedding pinterest board?! What next? Cat rescues? Marriage licenses? You checking out sperm banks too? Holy shit..." Cosima paused in her teasing tirade to laugh, "You have something you want to ask me, Delphine? "
Instead of teasing back or laughing as expected, Delphine went very quiet. "I just thought.. "
"We haven't even been together three months Delphine... and I'm not marrying you. You are not becoming my next of kin and making my medical decisions If I'm incapacitated." The last line struck a harsher tone than she was intending, Cosima reached out a hand to Delphine's shoulder before thinking better of it.
"Fine. No wedding. " Delphine nodded, "Do you want the condo or not."
"Oh that's right... DYAD only pays if you live there with me. Gotta do the u-haul thing, right? You think they'll reimburse us for the cats too?" Cosima grinned again unable to keep herself from laughing, "You are either crazy or a totally hopeless romantic."
Delphine sighed and bit her lip before answering, "Only with you, mon amour... I want... everything with you."
Cosima cannot stop herself from smiling despite herself, "You're crazy." Cosima whispered to Delphine gently, kissing her briefly on the mouth. "And I love you." She strokes her fingers along the blonde's jaw, drawing her back in for another kiss. Everyone has their little quirks, Cosima knows already, a hopeless romantic isn't the worst thing Delphine could be.
Not even six months later, Cosima somehow finds herself in a red sundress walking hand in hand with Delphine into city hall, an excited Scott and a reluctant Felix following them in. Bringing a clone as a witness was far too suspicious after all.
Despite the simplicity, Delphine beams in her white sundress, the smile never leaving her face, and Cosima can't stop herself from smiling dopily back at her love.
"Married." Delphine coos gently at Cosima, "We're going to be married."
Cosima cannot help herself, "Unless I change my mind in the next...oh...ten minutes?"
"We already got the license, Cosima." Delphine reminds her, but the smile on her face, "Appointment with the justice of the peace…all of it."
"Can we get this over with?" Felix groans in annoyance, "Just get hitched so we can get out of here."
"Yeah." Cosima grins again, "Let's get it done."
