Graduation is approaching, and Sam and Kurt sing their (possibly last? depends on how you look at it) duet for the week. The song is If It Means A Lot to You by A Day To Remember, and I highly suggest you listen to it before/after/during you read, because if you don't then this may not make total sense. Idunno, that's what I think. Enjoy.

And hey darling,
I hope you're good tonight.
And I know you don't feel right when I'm leaving.
Yeah, I want it but no, I don't need it.
Tell me something sweet to get me by,
'cause I can't come back home till they're singing

It's different, this time, and not because Kurt's singing the guy's lines and Sam's singing the girl's (although Kurt typically enjoyed the girl's parts of songs; it better suits his range), but because they're not singing and being carefree and being happy. Sam isn't really looking at Kurt, just at the guitar he's strumming away on, and Kurt is giving Sam these pained looks that aren't even being acknowledged.

Sam looks up at Kurt as his line comes, and he bites his lip and turns away as he starts to sing.

And hey sweetie.
Well, I need you here tonight,
and I know that you don't wanna be leaving me.
Yeah, you want it, but I can't help it;
I just feel complete when you're by my side,
but I know you can't come home till they're singing

It's almost graduation, and it's so close—so fucking close—and everybody is happy to be within arm's reach of possibly getting out of Lima. The only exception would be the two boys singing, giving each other pained looks like they're on the verge of tears; Kurt's leaving for a school in New York and Sam's staying in Lima, his financial issues preventing him from leaving Ohio for college.

Kurt takes over for the chorus, and everyone can see Sam visibly swallow down the emotions that are seeping through the cracks and into the song.

If you can wait 'til I get home,
then I swear to you that we can make this last.
(La la la)
If you can wait till I get home,
then I swear come tomorrow, this will all be in our past.
Well, it might be for the best.

Sam finally looks up at Kurt, looking him in the eyes as the tears are threatening to spill over—and they do.

You know you can't give me what I need.
and even though you mean so much to me,
I can't wait through everything.
Is this really happening?
I swear I'll never be happy again,
and don't you dare say we can just be friends.
I'm not some boy that you can sway.
We knew it'd happen eventually.

They don't notice the glee club singing the background "la la la's", but are instead focused on each other, on the truth of the words they're singing, and damnit why must Sam be playing the guitar because it's in the way of Kurt's possibility to cling onto the blonde why he still can.

So he instead settles for raising his arms, his hands gently on Sam's neck, feeling the vibrations in his throat as he sings to Kurt while Kurt sings back to him. They're both lost in each other, in their tears and dread, in the words leaving their mouths, and they never want it to end.

If you can wait 'til I get home,
then I swear we can make this last.
