She let the soft sheets enfold her worn out limbs. The muscles were cramping because of their tenseness, the joints aching. She was lying on top of the unused bed and felt the suns last warming rays leave the room, through the window, going far far away. A deep sigh found its way up through her body. She had been saving it in a deep corner within her throughout the day. The day had stretched so far that it let itself end now, at the dawn of something else. The beginning of a new era.
When the darkness spread over her did she let her heavy eyelids fall and started to relax her sore muscles, one by one. The bedsprings squeaked tiredly. The smell of laundry detergent burned slightly in her nostrils. She was careful with her wrapped abdomen when she slowly shook her shoulder to get rid of the tension. A small gratifying crack was heard. All she wanted was to sleep. It had been a lifetime since she last got some sleep. Her body had been ready to fall asleep without her for hours, her mind felt numb. All she wanted was to drift of, be over with it. She wrapped the down comforter tightly around herself, yawned. Her insides felt muted. It was quiet around her. No voices, no breathing, no movements. Many were still getting their wounds taken care of, some sat with them; held their hands, whispered soothing words in their ears, held them close. Everyone had their privet space. This was hers, the empty room.
She was breathing out and breathing in. Out, in, out… She sighed. Rolled over so that she was lying on her other side. Something was missing. On the perimeter of her consciousness was something itching and squirming. She needed something. During the last year had she always gotten a couple of hours less sleep than she should have had. Some nights did the sleeplessness claim her, with her thoughts keeping her awake.
Her thoughts started to drift slowly towards her night before, from now and backwards, minute by minute. She brushed her teeth, she entered the room. She had said good night to Dawn, had hugged her and had felt a teardrop fall on her shoulder from her sister's face. Her brain took serpentine paths, got hung up on details, but was inevitably moving toward the day's events. She felt something twitching inside her, in the area around the chest. Breathing got heavier. No!, not now. Not now... She put the emotion in a box and lock it in somewhere deep inside of her. Later. Sleep now. Later… Preferably never. She held the key in her cramping fist. Felt sharp nails dig into the thin skin. She pressed it to her chest. Her face was still stiff with the mask that had been plastered there the entire day. She let it stay there. She sighed. Rolled over and wrapped the comforter tighter around herself. Put her arm around her waist and held on hard. She shut her eyes tightly and let a dreamless sleep take her away.
