"How do you fall in love?" She asked the question aloud, forgetting for the moment that she was not alone.
"What?" The stunned reply came from her left.
She turned and eyed the obviously startled boy wonder, she hadn't meant to speak aloud, which was unusual for her, but since she had she might as well continue her train of thought.
"How do you fall in love? They make it seem like it's an accident, like you can't help it." She gestured to the television screen, where a couple was currently professing undying love for one another.
"Well," Robin took Raven's question at face value and tried to think of an answer. "I suppose it's partly chemical, you know attraction and all that."
"Ha, I know attraction, but you don't see me acting like a loon or falling madly in love with everyone I have ever been attracted to, do you?" Her cynical tone was thick as she arched an eyebrow at him.
"Uh, well." He was trying to wrap his mind around the fact that Raven, his best friend and teammate had just confessed that she was attracted to someone…actually multiple someone's. "I said partly, so you have attraction and uh, compatibility. You have to be able to have things in common."
"Hmmm, maybe, but isn't there more. What about all that soul mate crap?" She asked muting the television and tucking her legs up under her to pay more attention to the conversation, now fully involved in the topic. "Is there truly only one person for people? And if so, what happens if they die before you meet them, are you destined to remain alone?"
"I don't think anyone is destined to remain alone." Robin replied, trying to map his thoughts out in a logical and intelligent way, it never paid to go into any conversation with Raven half assed. "I don't really know about soul mates," he gave half a chuckle. "I'll let you know if I meet mine, but I do think that when you meet the person you want to spend the rest of your life with, that they have to want it as much as you or it will just fall apart."
"I thought you had already met yours." Raven's tone was only partially teasing as a small frown winkled her forehead slightly.
"What, who?" Robin's tone was genuinely stupefied.
"Starfire, dimwit." Her sardonic tone was back in full force, as was her raised eyebrow. "You know your girlfriend."
"We dated, as in past tense." He replied defensively, "There was attraction, and friendship as a base, but not a whole lot of compatibility beyond that. So we remain friends without," He paused to emphasis the 'without' "Romantic leanings anymore."
"So," She hesitated to make sure she had his full attention. "You weren't 'in love' with her then?"
"No, maybe the idea of being in love, but not the way you mean. I do love Star, just like I love the rest of you…friends, family." He gave a shrug, a little uncomfortable at the turn the conversation had taken to dissecting his life.
"Then you aren't really qualified to answer the question, seeing as how you have never been 'in love'" She made quotations in the air with her hands.
"I've been in love," His voice once again defensive as he leaned forward. "Who are you to talk; you've never been in love yourself."
To this she smiled, a secretive smile that sent a ball of electricity to his stomach.
"I never said I haven't been in love, for all you know I could be in love right now." She stood and leaned over "You've just never asked." With a rare smile still in place she floated out of the room, leaving a stunned and some what uncomfortable boy wonder behind.
