Because I realized what the finale was missing was a group hug to end it all.
The phrases at the end are depicted at the top and bottom of Avatar's map of the world, shown at the beginning of each episode. I found the translations somewhere. Mike and Bryan really did see their story through, because if you interpret them, Zuko was going to join the group all along, and everything would be resolved in the end. The way it should be :)
It came to Toph's mind that they all smelled really bad.
Not as bad as Iroh's old sandal, but still.
They smelled like smoldering shavings of metal and wood and ashen silk.
But that was only she, Sokka, and Suki. Zuko smelled like Aang; a stark combination of lightning and sweat. Katara smelled of sewer water and burnt hair. And it went without saying that all of them ranked of smoke.
Zuko had been the first one to hug her. She could tell he had been hurt; he limped and leaned heavily on one side and the hug was one-armed, but when the airship had landed he had walked over and hugged her.
She was thoroughly shocked, but touched, and was careful not to put too much pressure on his bad side when she returned the gesture.
Sokka and Suki soon joined them, walking in a hug of their own, Sokka leaning on Suki to support his leg. They shared the details of what had happened in the Earth Kingdom, and Zuko filled them in on the Agni Kai with Azula. When Sokka learned Zuko had taken the bolt meant for Katara, he too hugged Zuko.
"You saved her life," Sokka sounded like he was going to cry. "Thank you." Zuko only smiled.
"I owed her. And she paid me back and saved mine."
They all turned to look at Katara. She hadn't moved since they'd stepped off the airship. The minute she had seen them, all together, all alive, she'd fallen to her knees crying. Aang had leaned down beside her, and she flung her arms around him, hugging him and sobbing, sobbing, sobbing. Toph could barely discern her words.
"I'm sorry, I'm sorry," she choked. "I was so horrible…I didn't know what I was thinking or feeling and it scared me. I was awful to you, Aang…and I could've died, you could've died, you could've died, and that would have been the last thing—" the last words was drowned by another torrent of tears.
Aang just held her.
"I'm okay, Katara. Everyone's fine, it's all over."
"It's all over," Zuko repeated softly.
Wordlessly, they joined the two, the group of six embracing tightly. Toph sank into the warm mix of strong arms around her.
Everyone's fine, it's all over. This brought an overwhelming feeling of relief; so much Toph felt she might cry herself. They pulled closer together, and she felt Sokka's rough sleeve, Suki's tangled hair, Zuko's heavy hand, Aang's sweaty shoulder, and Katara's warm tears.
It was all over. She could feel everyone smile.
"Thank you," Aang whispered. "I love you all so much more than best friends."
The heroes divide the world in four.
All is reunited under heaven.
