Secrets of the Ludis.

For Gannicus the most shocking part of falling in love with Melitta was that he had already been in love with her husband.

Auctus was not always Auctus. His parents had named him Eirenaios, meaning peaceful, for as a babe he rarely cried.

By his 14th summer he had surpassed his father and elder brothers in height and the nickname Megálos (large) had stuck. The Roman slavers had simply exchanged the Greek for Latin. His true name, like much of his true self, was kept secret from his roman masters and only ever shared with Barca.

Sometimes after Meletta's death and Gannicus departure Oenomaus will take position near to cliff edge when giving instruction in the faint hope that a lucky blow will send him over the precipice.

Despite all the risks he took and efforts made to become the Champion of Capua, Crixus sometimes wonders if it would have been better to die a lowly slave building the new arena than to live as his Domina's whore.

Barca has seen every other person he has ever loved die. His mother was murdered in front of him by Roman soldiers. Cyprian fell to Roman sword the same night that Barca was captured and he was watching through the gate when Actus fell to Crixus in the arena.

"What of your father?" Pietros has asked.

"I watched as my own hands slew him."

His greatest fear is that Pietros will end up being trained for the arena and Barca will stand helpless, witness to his death.
