Tonight there is a total lunar eclipse with a blood moon. This is the first time in over three hundred years that this event coincides with the winter solstice. These events have inspired the following story:

Background:
A celestial spirit from Canis Major fought to protect her mage, whom she had fallen in love with, from a horrible creature. During the fight, she was completely outmatched and heavily injured. Instead of abandoning the mage and returning to the heavens, she sacrificed her immortality in order to save his life. Her star fell from the sky the night of that winter solstice as the moon passed between the earth and the sun, casting a shadow over the land. A few towns over, the heart of a stillborn child started to beat.
Mai grew up in the care of Makarov. Her parents had abandoned her merely a day after birth. According to the local townsfolk, when her lifeless body reanimated a few abnormalities grew. She was thought to be possessed by a demon for the wolf-like ears and tail that appeared. The town had not seen a celestial mage, and knew not of the beings related to the summoning. Makarov, who was traveling the land in search of the monster, recognized the presence of a celestial being in the child. He offered to raise her far away. The townsfolk eagerly agreed.
She was a handful for the old man. As the years progressed it became apparent that no memories of the celestial being were left within her, but there was a decent portion of her power. Mai eventually learned to hide her extra features, and could summon claws and fangs when needed. However, her anger fueled the power beyond her control, and only a strong physical restraint could stop her from wrecking havoc.
Much to her dismay, Makarov assigned Mai to accompany Gray Fullbuster. His ice make abilities were strong enough to keep her from harming anyone or herself. They have been near each other since childhood. Due to the affect her emotions have on her uncontrollable powers, Mai developed a calm and calculating personality.

I sat in the back of the guild hall. As the rumble of the members continued in the background, I turned my attention back to Cana. She had been shuffling her cards in order to read my fortune. Now, as she was laying them out in front of me, she smiled and said "Well, looks like good luck for you this year."
"Are you trying to be sarcastic…?"
