A light knock, more of a scratch than a knock actually, sounded at her door. Sighing in resignation, she waited in silence. The door opened, the light that spilled in from the hallway brightening her room a little.
A voice whispered, "Donna?"
Remaining silent, Donna continued to await the inevitable. The room fell back into darkness as the door was quietly closed. Stealthy footfalls sounded softly as bare feet padded towards the bed.
The voice whispered again, "Donna?"
Enjoying the game, Donna stayed still and quiet, remembering to breathe deeply and evenly. Cool air wafted around her feet as the duvet was lifted, and then the mattress shifted as the intruder crawled under the duvet at the foot of the bed. Stifling a giggle as the intruder commando crawled up the bed, under the cover of the duvet, Donna waited. The cool air vanished as the person stilled, lying stretched out beside her with a sigh.
Again, the voice whispered, slightly querulous now, "Donna?"
Donna shifted a little, as though disturbed in sleep, before lying still and continuing to breathe deeply. The intruder cautiously wriggled a bit closer and stilled, waiting to see if she'd noticed. When she didn't move, the intruder wriggled even closer before freezing again. Donna wondered if you could die from trying not to laugh.
More movement under the covers and cool fingers brushed against hers tentatively, inquiringly. Smiling in the dark, she let the fingers entwine with hers, squeezing them a little as though in reflex. She felt as the person shifted onto their side to face her, mirroring her position as she lay curled on her side.
Cool breath ghosted over her face, tinged with a mint toothpaste smell, as the voice whispered desperately, "Donna?"
Relenting, Donna whispered back in mock exasperation, "What?"
Relief and hope filled the voice as it murmured bashfully, "Can I sleep in here with you, tonight?"
Grinning as a feeling of love, protection and delight filled her, Donna once again experienced the giddy sense of wonder at this 900-odd year old alien finding her presence comforting. She scared away the things that scared the last of the Time Lords, a being whose power frightened entire species of creatures that Donna found terrifying.
Gathering him into her arms, chuckling softly as he squeaked happily and nestled into her, she replied fondly, "Yeah, just this once. Silly Martian."
Rubbing her hand across his flannel clad back, she smoothed his silky hair from his face. Humming softly, she left her hand on the side of his head and stroked her thumb over his cheek bone. His double heart beat slowed against her chest as his breathing evened out into his familiar snuffly snoring.
Laying in the intimate darkness, with his body a pleasant weight on her, Donna turned her face into his hair and drank in his scent. It was so different to anything she'd ever smelt, so alien yet so familiar. Pressing a kiss to his head, she laughed as he made a cat-like mewling noise and wrapped his arm around her waist. Rubbing her cheek on his head, she laughed again as he pulled himself closer to her and tangled his leg with hers. With a final kiss, she whispered, "Sweet dreams, Spaceman."
She could hear the smile in his voice as he mumbled, sleepy and happy, "Donna."
