Friend of the dead
The day had finally come. The day we got revenge on the Capitol. The Capitol's first (and last) Hunger Games.
The reaping is here. All the names of the most important Capitol children have been placed in a reaping ball. All the children had been in pens for months, ever since the rebellion.
The fire inside me still burns. It will never go out, not unless I get my sister back. Not unless all those who have died for us, for me really, come back And that will never happen.
So now I am the girl that burns. The girl who is quiet but deadly. I am like ... no! I will not think of her. The girl who gave me, gave us all, hope. I will not think of Madge Undersee.
But it's too late. As the memories flood into my head, I call for Peeta. His arms around me give me hope. He knows this year will be hard for me. The mockingjay will be everywhere, in honor of me.
But it will only remind me of Madge. My only friend, the girl who knew how to start the rebellion, how to get us free. And she payed for it with her life.
They wanted me to mentor sector 12, or the 12th pair of tributes chosen. I said no. Instead I will mentor sector 4. In honour of Finnick, another brave soul silenced forever.
I see traces of him in Alex, his son. His son that he never got to meet. All because of me.
When Alex offers me a sugar cube in my tea, I'm reminded of Finnick's slow drawl, of the day we met. I could wish for all the reminders of the rebellion, of all I have lost, to disappear, but then I wouldn't know who I was anymore. I am friend of the dead.
The train has come to take us to the Capitol. How funny our old escort, Effie, looks, stripped of her makeup and Capitol fashion. Turns out she's a blonde, with big brown eyes. She's also quite short. Next to Peeta, she looks almost like a child. I don't recognize her until I see her name tag.
Even though I hate the Capitol styles, without them Effie isn't Effie. She has dark circles under her eyes from the nightmares she has from her time in captivity. Haymitch has moved to the Capitol to be with her. They are happy together. Turns out they always liked each other, and that Effie was on our side during the whole rebellion. I'm happy for her.
The trains have gotten even faster. We're at the Capitol in mere hours. As we pull in, I nearly fall over. Gone are the gaudy buildings and gaudier people. Instead there are simple gray towers and almost average people. They look like the rich in some of the districts.
I catch the eye of a child as we step off the platform. She looks to be 16, maybe 17. She steps up to me with a bouquet of white lilies. There's something familiar about this child. She has long wavy black hair and sea green eyes, but there's something about the way she looks at me, the way she holds herself.
And then it hits me. She looks like a cross between Annie Cresta and Madge!
"Greetings to the Capitol from a District 4, I mean, Capitol girl."
District 4? She doesn't look like a Capitol girl, that's for sure. She's seen hardship. District 4 would make sense, seeing as she has the general look.
I read the card. 'Welcome to the Capitol.-All eligible tributes and Alison Donner.'
Donner? As in Maysilee Donner? Madge's aunt, Maysilee Donner?
I feel myself fainting. This must be my punishment. Madge's possible cousin, come back to haunt me. And I know, as I fall into a swirling vortex of blackness, I know that Alison Donner, the girl in front of me will be reaped.
