Chapter One: Confusion.
Standing near the edge of the bridge, staring at the icy water below. Wondering why Kristen had to die. Why not me? Abbey thought. If Kristen's not alive I have nothing. No best friend. No one who gets me and the only other person is a ghost. The two people that meant the most to her were dead. Were ghosts. With those thoughts, Abbey started towards the very edge of the bridge. Deep breath in. Deep breath out. She was ready to jump. Ready to sacrifice her life to be with her friend and her boyfriend.
"Abbey, Abbey please don't do this!" she turned around, looking for the voice that she had longed to hear since the night she disappeared.
"Kristen?" she whispered. The only sign that she spoke was the swirl of foggy breath.
"Yes, Abbey. It's me." Kristen's voice sounded closer this time, and Abbey frantically searched in all directions, hoping to find a glimpse of her friend. She didn't see anything.
"Kristen," she whispered again, then in a louder voice said, "Why shouldn't I? I have nothing to live for. Not without you to share all the memories we had and all that we were going to. Our goofy traditions and the boys we liked."
"You can still have that, Abbey. One person I know still wants you alive. Although he would like you to be a part of his world, he knows you wouldn't be happy. I know you wouldn't be happy." Kristen sighed. Abbey caught a glimpse of the familiar person. A person she had only seen in photographs since that tragic night.
"Caspian." Abbey sighed with longing at just the thought. She started to back away from the edge of the bridge. She sunk to her knees, in confusion. Suddenly she sensed a presence to her right. She looked up to find the familiar image of Caspian. She would recognize that pale hair with the streak of black anywhere.
"Abbey," He whispered, reaching his hand out to place it on her shoulder, but as they both knew it would, it passed right through her. "Abbey please don't do this. I would give anything to be back. To be alive, and you're considering giving up all the great things you have? All the great things you get to experience in everyday life? I would do anything to be alive again, just like I'll do anything to be with you. Well, almost anything. What I won't do is allow you to sacrifice your life to be with me. We'll figure something out eventually."
Abbey had little hope in finding a solution for them to be together that didn't involve sacrificing her life, but they hadn't exactly tried anything yet. Who knows, with Kristen's help they might actually think of a plan. They had to.
