"Its leaking!" Wally cried, holding a soggy Lian at an arms length. "I didn't do it!"
Lian squirmed happily in his hands, letting out a gleeful giggle that made Wally smile a little, despite the soaking diaper.
"Then fix her!" Artemis said from the kitchen, voice muffled through the walls. She busied herself with the dishes, not wanting to be stuck with diaper duty.
"Ok," Wally said uneasily, looking around for a diaper. Roy had left his daughter with the couple, going out for "business," with Jade. Neither Artemis or Wally had any experience with children, and if anything Wally was better with them. Roy had left a flowered duffel filled with diapers and snacks for Lian, but Wally couldn't find it anywhere.
"Hey, babe, where is the diaper bag?" He called, flinching as Lian swatted him in the face with a chubby hand.
Artemis paused, hand hovering over a chipped china plate she had gotten at a garage sale. "Uh," In reality, she had completely forgotten where it was, "Look by the door?" She heard muffled footsteps as Wally got up and went to search for the bag, the sound of Lian's bubbling laugh ringing through the house.
She smiled, putting the dish in the cabinet with a clink. Maybe some day the sound of her own children's' laughter would echo through these walls, the noise of padding feet racing over the wood floors-
No, Artemis. You didn't want kids, remember? She chided herself, promptly smacking her head against the carelessly open cabinet door. She bit her lip, holding back the chain of trucker-worthy swear words that threatened to spill out at any second.
Back in the living room, Wally had found the bag, and was shuffling through the inside contents with a grim look on his face.
"Well, Lian, I have no idea what I am doing," He grumbled, holding up a diaper between two fingers. Sure, he had seen people change babies before, but he never thought he would actually have to do it. Besides, she was Artemis's niece, not his.
"Well, Lian. I have no idea what I am doing," he repeated, louder this time so Artemis could hear. After a short silence, Artemis emerged from the kitchen with a surly look on her pretty features. He smiled winningly up at her, holding out the diaper. Snatching it from him, she swatted his shoulder with her other hand and mumbled, "Get out, geek." before looking Lian over uncertainly.
Wally cackled and moved to a further end of the couch, plopping Lian down in front of his girlfriend. "I wish you luck," he said semi-seriously, gazing at her in a slightly creepy manner. "Beautiful,"
"You are so weird." Artemis muttered, quickly changing the baby.
