Chapter 1
"Oh, no!" Ayame cursed as she ran across the street, her breathing coming out in heavy rasps. She had just started heading home after finishing her shift at Cathies Cakes, a cafe that she worked part time at - when a sudden down pour of rain had emerged out of nowhere.
She mentally scolded herself for not remembering an umbrella and managed to quickly take refuge under a nearby bus shelter.
Exhaling a tired breath, she looked up at the sky in dismay. The clouds were dark and brooding, covering every thing in a blanket of grey. She frowned. "Looks like it won't be letting up for a while..."
Knowing she'd be stuck their for sometime, she scanned her surroundings. The houses around her looked worn out and dreary; much different from when the sun was out. She usually enjoyed walking through this part of town as it was quiet and there was not as many people around. But seeing it now made her wish that she had taken a different way back home.
She shivered from both the cold and eeriness of everything around. The pitter patter of the rain could be heard against the roof above her and she was again thankful for the safety of the shelter. Pushing down her frustration, she took another glance out at the street. She hoped to spot another passer by who could quell the uneasiness she was feeling. But none seemed to be in sight.
And that was when she saw it.
At first, she wasn't really sure what 'it' was. From where she was standing she could only see, what looked like to her, a black spec.
But after numerous amounts of squinting, she managed finally conclude that the 'it' was in actual fact a cat.
Now, what was a cat doing out here at this time of day in the rain? It was most likely a stray. Even so, Ayame felt her heart clench in pity towards the small creature. The wind was ferociously violent and the cold bit against her skin. She tugged on her coat, trying to keep herself warm. She glanced at the feline once more - and before she could process anything, she found herself already walking at a brisk pace towards it.
The cat didn't run away like she initially had thought it would. It instead simply just stood there, its eyes shut closed and unmoving. For a few small seconds, Ayame wondered if it was still alive and nearly jumped four feet in the air when she saw its eyes open. She clutched her hand over her heart, nearly frightened to death.
She looked back at the young, dark pussycat and gasped loudly.
"Woah…!" Her mouth hung open in sheer amazement. It's eyes, they were beautiful! It's pupils seemed to pierce right through her, the amount of small shades of blue they held in them was completely astounding. There were so many that she doubted she'd be able to name them all. She couldn't help but gape at the uniqueness of the little one.
After recovering from her shock, Ayame inspected the feline further. She discovered that the cat's fur was not any normal shade she'd ever seen before. From afar, the hair had looked almost black but up close it seemed to be a very deep, dark - almost iridescent shade of blue.
She could not believe her eyes. Where had it come from? It surely must have belonged to someone since it was so breathtakingly beautiful. But she did not see a collar or any type of identification on it. She shook her head, now was not the time to be thinking about these things. She needed to get the small one out of the rain.
She slowly reached her hand out towards the feline, hoping she wouldn't scare it. The cat's ears pricked up in alert. It peered at her in a slightly curious manner, but its body language also showcased it's feelings of uncertainty. So far, so good I guess. Ayame inched her hand closer, managing to get a strong grip around its torso. But it suddenly became unnerved and started to squirm and wriggle.
She tried gently stroking its head to calm the creature, while cooing out small encouraging words. "It's okay little one - I won't hurt you, I promise. I just want to get you out of the rain."
It suddenly stopped struggling altogether. It was as if it had strangely sensed that she was telling the truth. The cat lay calm in her arms, staring up at her once again. For some odd reason, it felt as if it was glaring at her with its sharp eyes. But that was obviously impossible.
"Of course!" Sarcasm dripped from her voice. "As if a cat can glare." She giggled to herself at the ridiculous prospect.
Weird likelihood's aside, Ayame was relived that she'd managed to calm the small one down. She smiled brightly at the feline, before putting it under her coat in an attempt to try and keep the rain off of it. However as she did this, the clouds in the sky had begun to disperse and the rain had significantly died down.
"Huh?" She looked up at the brightening weather in confusion. B-but it was a ninety percent chance of overcast weather today? She frowned, What should she do now? Should she just leave it here? No, she couldn't do that, what if someone was looking for it?
She chewed on her lip, thinking about her options. She looked back down at the small cat and her heart squeezed with remorse. She hadn't noticed before but its fur seemed slightly grubby with dirt and the poor thing was probably hungry. How could she think for even second to leave this lost soul out here alone?
Ayame nodded to herself. Her decision had been made. She hoisted the cat up in her arms once more (this time with less struggling), and began to walk her long usual route home.
