Chapter one
It was late and all that both figures wanted was to sleep. They lay back to back, not aware that they other was still awake, both willing sleep the come and take them away. Faith Geller was staring at the beside table but she wasn't looking at it. Her mind was a million miles away. Appointments, upcoming matches, shopping lists and other things swamped her thoughts. Jeff Hardy was watching the curtians drawn over the third storey window. Faith dominated his thoughts. All his current worries where connected to her in some way. Even now she seemed a million miles away. He felt her roll over besides him and shift position. He could tell she was having trouble sleeping, it was something Jeff had leant about her during their four years together. If she could just tell him what was wrong maybe he could help. He knew James was a big part of it. James who Faith had seemingly known forever, James who had shared all her heartbreaks, not just with her but with Nicole too. James who'd been apart of their team. James who'd killed himself two weeks earlier. Jeff had been there when the phone call came through, he saw Nicole and Faith bolt out of the house and heard the car screech away, but he didn't learn why until later. Faith called him once from the hospital and told him to go to bed, which he did. He woke up hours later to find her crying in the dark hallway. Faith had spoken about it since he stayed up with her in his arms until the sun came up, but he knew from Nicole she wasn't alright. Nicole didn't mind talking to Jeff. She didn't mind telling him that she hadn't slept either since it happened. Nicole had been plauged with dreams since, dreams in which she lost Faith as well. Jeff had one the night before, his arms fell through her each time he went for her and eventually she'd gone. He felt her shuffle away from him, back towards the edge of the bed. He just wanted to make it all better for her, he wanted to know what was wrong. Faith's eyes where heavy now, but she was no closer to dozing off then she had been two hours before. She knew she had a doctor's appointment on Tuesday, that the house needed bread, milk and eggs and she was wrestling Amy on Saturday. Her life was falling apart around her. It was breaking down and slipping through her fingers. Faith had accecpted she wasn't going to be able to stop it about a month ago, still, it didn't make it any easier it watch it go. Jeff wouldn't understand, she wanted to tell him, she loved him, but she couldn't. She couln't tell Nicole either, she had enough to deal with. She was taking James' death hard. Faith inched forwards towards Jeff and gingerly put her arms around him before snuggling into his back. She felt comforted. It wasn't fair on him. It wasn't exactly fair on her either.
What little sleep she did get was patchy and disturbed, Faith woke at six a.m and headed out onto the small balcony the room had. Early morning drivers cruised on the road below, she could hear a couple above having breakfast and the early breeze held a chill that made her shiver and fold her arms in hope of keeping herself warm. It lifted the stray strands of blonde hair that had escaped from her ponytail, off the back of her neck and she leaned against the metal rail. Today was going to be different, she told herself. Today she was going to jolt herself back to how she use to be, for everyone, for Nicole and especially for Jeff. She rubbed her eyes. Home today, thank god. She was going straight to bed as soon as she got off the plane. Usually it would be washing and shopping, Nicole doing one and Faith doing the other. But last week they'd both gone to bed, woken up at eight and eaten a tub of Ben and Jerry's while watching a romantic comedy. Maybe she should go to Jeff's tonight, hmmmm.....maybe. She heard the bed sheets rustle as he moved. Faith considered going back to bed and having a long lazy lie-in, but her body was awake now and it wanted to move. Maybe it was her sub conscious telling her she didn't really want to go back to bed. Faith sighed. How could you be in love with someone but be so unhappy ? It wasn't Jeff, he wasn't making her unhappy. It would be easier if she could just tell him, but she couldn't. He came out onto the balcony, but didn't move far from the door into the room. Neither of them said anything. Faith stared out at what little view was offered and Jeff watched her. Eventually he broke the silence by simply asking:
"Are you alright?"
Faith nodded.
