Silverpelt coldly illuminated the bloody scene beneath them, a single star falling from the sky like a teardrop shed for those lying on the ground. A raven called out in it's harsh voice, adding to the strange atmosphere.
A pair of yellow eyes appeared in the bushes surrounding the clearing. A black cat stepped out, surveying the sight that surrounded him.
The bodies of many cats lay cold and stiff, their life's blood drying onto their fur and the fur of their loved ones and enemies. A white cat sprawled on the other side of the clearing moaned in pain, but could not move.
The black cat padded through the silent battlefield towards the white cat.
"Come now." He said softly, licking the white cat's wounds. "What's your name?"
"I – I am Rainsong." The white cat said in a thin voice. It was a she-cat, the black cat realized.
The black cat nodded. "Rainsong, I am Horizon. I am a rogue. If you can, tell me what happened here."
"N – no." Rainsong rasped. "I cannot." And she fell limp, the lack of blood stealing her consciousness.
Horizon took in his surroundings. He spotted some cobwebs not too far away and brought them back to her, bandaging her wounds clumsily.
The sun rose, and with the sun, came Rainsong.
"You're still here." She murmured, her eyes still closed.
Horizon pulled his tongue across her ear to sooth her. "Yes." He said softly. "What happened?"
"There was a big battle –" Rainsong had to stop to take breaths between sentences. "Redstar wanted – territory. Power. Silverstar – refused to give in. So did – Sandstar and Riverstar. It was a Gathering. More cats – came from the camps to help. But they all – they all died. Except me." She paused. "Thank you. The Clans – the Clans have died. I am all that is left."
The story wrenched Horizon's heart. He knew a bit about the Clans, and how they met here every full moon in peace. How they had killed themselves in a time of truce was sorrowful.
"Everything comes to an end." He told her quietly. "As will you and I."
Rainsong let out a wail.
"I'm sorry." He meowed, helping her to her paws. Her cries grew louder as she saw the mass of death before them.
"Help me bury them." She said in a whisper, her eyes never leaving the dead bodies.
Horizon nodded silently, sharing her grief for these unknown cats.
And as the sun set once more, Rainsong and Horizon entwined their tails and brushed their cheeks together, their heads bowed in sorrow for what once was.
