In the land of Fiore, when one would mention 'Fairy Tail', most citizens would think of strong, destructive mages like Natsu Dragneel, or Erza Scarlet. Never would one think of the tiny little winged cat that came along with them.
Though he might seem weak, stupid and innocent, Happy was none of that. (Maybe he was a little dumb, but he was a neko! You can't blame him.)
To most (if not all) Fairy Tail members, Happy the Exceed was a brave and loyal guildmate, definitely an asset to any good team. Whether it was to fly someone to safety or crack a funny joke, the blue Exceed never failed to impress.
And then there were times where he seemed like a nuisance, where fellow guildmates would get irritated at his troublesome antics and try to swat at the snickering creature.
I guess he learned it from his 'father'.
Speaking of which, wherever Natsu would go, Happy was almost sure to follow. It was rare to see any one of them alone. They both really seemed to be related. They act so similar, both causing trouble and destruction everywhere they went, albeit Happy's kind of destruction was a little less... destructive.
And though Natsu seemed very childish, he seemed like a relatively good father. He would always be so protective and caring towards him, just like a good father was supposed to be. It made the Exceed really think about his childhood and how he grew up.
Then there was Lisanna, Happy's 'mother'. He didn't really know what a mother was supposed to do, so he couldn't determine whether she was a good mom or not. She was there before, helping Natsu take care of him and all, but after she 'died', Happy realized that her missing presence wasn't as difficult to grow accustomed to. Don't get him wrong, Happy loved Lisanna, but the short-lived heartache wasn't what he was expecting.
In his 'mother's' absence, there was someone else. Someone that gave him fish every time, someone that rubbed his fur lovingly just when he needed it, and someone who took care of him like a mother. That someone was Lucy. He loved Lucy just as much as the next guy. She was caring and fun, and very enjoyable to tease. Even if she was one of the people that would try to swat him out of the air when he made a comment, she took care of him nonetheless.
This is where he learned what it meant to be a 'mother'. After listening to Mira and Lucy's conversation one time, wherein Mira told Lucy that she thought she would be a good mother because of her actions towards Happy, was when he realized that Lucy treated him like a son. She would bathe him, give him food and a place to rest. She protected him when he couldn't protect himself, and that made him smile. Maybe he would lay off the mean jokes for a little while.
Or not.
And whenever he would think about his childhood, how could he miss the most important part?
Fairy Tail!
The guild was his family. He was born in the guild and he was going to stay in the guild until he died. Fairy Tail gave him a home, they gave him a reason to keep living. They provided strength in tough times, and courage in unnerving ones. They have him a chance to put his skills and loyalty to use. He didn't know what he would do without Fairy Tail. He didn't know what he would do without his friends, his family.
And frankly, he didn't really want to find out.
