"Lily?" Severus says quietly. They were sitting in the Astronomy Tower, where she was helping him with his homework. He claimed he kept mixing up the constellations… but he had yet to get one wrong. She hums in a moderately affirmative manner, signaling she heard him without speaking.

"… I didn't ask you to come up here because I needed help." He says shyly. She chuckles softly. She was arguably the brightest witch in her year- she hadn't been fooled for an instant that he actually needed help. HE taught HER most of her constellations.

"Oh… Really? Then why…?" She liked him. He was nice to her when most people weren't. He didn't care that her parents weren't ancient pure families, or even wizards at all. She would play along with his shy attempts, even if all he has to do is. He shuffles his feet, and plays with his hands nervously.

"You're really beautiful, Lily. And- and I like you a lot." He whispers to the floor. Severus has never allowed himself to be this vulnerable to anyone before, and he doesn't particularly like it. His stomach is twisted in knots and he can hardly bear to look at Lily and see the disgusted loathing- or worse, pitying and apologetic look she was sure to be wearing.

"Sev." Lily says quietly. She isn't saying anything to the back of his head, and she is stubborn as a mule. He looks up nervously, his eyes timidly rising to hers.

"I know. I came anyway." She smiles, trying to make sure her meaning is understood. She really does care for him. She leans over and kisses his cheek gently.

From the doorway, James feels like his heart is breaking into a hundred girly pieces. He just wants to punch Severus and humiliate him in front of everyone, but he leaves quietly. Lily would never forgive him for ruining her special moment.
