Chapter 1: Welcoming Committee

"Must we have the celebration? You know how I despise unnecessary attention," Legolas Greenleaf complained to Celendril, one of the elves returning with Legolas to Mirkwood. Celendril smiled to himself.

"I am sorry, Prince Legolas, but you know that I have not the power to overrule your father's commands," he told Legolas. The blonde elf nudged his white horse away from Celendril, muttering choice swear words in Elvish under his breath. Celendril laughed and said, "I've not met one who can match your tongue when you are angry, Prince, and that is including my uncle!"

"Go and shove it up your…"

"Look!" an elf shouted, cutting off Legolas' reply. "Mirkwood!"---

As the elves entered the forest, Legolas could hear the whispering of elves in the forest. Some were speaking to others in Elvish, and others were singing in light, merry voices. As they entered their realm of Mirkwood, the group traveling with Legolas could start to see elves gathering in the trees around them.

King Thranduil came to greet Legolas and said to him, "My son, I am very pleased to see that you have made it back with the others safely."

"I am glad to be back, Father," Legolas answered. "For too long now I have been away from the comforts of Mirkwood."

"Come, then. Let us go put your horse in the stables so you can get ready for the feast," Thranduil told Legolas, who simply cursed, in Elvish and English, under his breath.---

At the feast, Legolas felt very self-conscious. He was the center of attention and hated it, but something else worried him more. King Thranduil had not spoken directly to Legolas since he first arrived back in Mirkwood. Whenever Legolas spoke to his father, Thranduil would just put an "I-know-something-you-don't-know" look on his face. Legolas, fed up with his father's secretivity, left the feast early and went to his room to sleep.---

---Note: Legolas picked up some human swears while traveling with Aragorn.---
