"Please... can... you protect her?" The woman was breathless and tearful, her hair soaked with the pouring rain and her husband waiting in the car. "The war is starting... they'll look for me! They'll look for my baby..."
"I..." Raine Leonheart facefaulted. Her perfectly normal neighbors.... that nice, normal woman who told her how she dreamed of the ocean... was a sorceress? And they'd hurt the baby? The baby... screaming. The horn honking. The woman sobbing. She was tired. So tired. And...
"PLEASE!" The woman forced the tiny bundle into her arms. "Please.... Raine.... please. You're the only person we can go to... please take care of her?"
"Yes... of course, I'll take care of her."
Without another word, the woman nodded a thank you and ran back to her husband's waiting car.
"Oh, Ellone..." Raine cradled the calming infant in her arms. "Oh Ellone." She gazed out the window, the drops pounding the stones of the square.
'Whoever would have thought that Mrs. Kramer was a sorceress?'
