The wind hurled snow and slush against the windows, making the house creak all over. A sharp rapping on the front door broke the unsettling noise.

"Door!" cried Joe. Frank glared toward the kitchen, where Joe was helping their aunt make some sort of cookie or pastry. "Frank, get the door!" he tried again, and Frank turned the volume up on his laptop. The door was probably for Joe anyway.

Gertrude joined him a moment later. "Frank, I know we're closer and you're in a sour mood, but our hands are filthy with dough! Could you please get the door?" she called exasperatedly.

A headache that had been poking gently at his sinuses finally broke through and stabbed him in the forehead. With a groan, he shut his laptop to silence it and dropped it on the coffee table. Padding through the foyer in his meticulous socks, Frank yanked open the door with one last sigh.

With a quick whiff of hyacinth, snow, and car exhaust, all his agitation and aches dripped away and into his socks. Nancy Drew stood in front of him clutching at her coat with a face pinched and pink from the cold. "Hi."

"Hi," Frank said, still recovering from the shock of finding her there.

"I smell cookies." She looked at her boots then back up at Frank with a shy smile. "Can I come in?"

He held his hand out and let a smile relax his face.
