I loved the relationship that they had in the movie.
Disclaimer: I don't own The Avengers or the characters. Lyrics in italics are Rise Against.
We'll sneak out while they sleep and sail off in the night, we'll come clean and start over the rest of our life, when we're gone, we'll stay gone, out of sight out of mind, it's not too late, we have the rest of our lives…
Loki was right about one thing. Her ledger is dripping red. She had dug her hole a mile deep and now she's climbing her way out with no lifeline.
That's not entirely true, she realizes. Barton is right beside her. She trusts him with her life.
Love. Love is for children. That was the truth, too. At least the love that Loki was talking of. As she watches Clint in the light of day, crisis averted, she can't help but think that she does love him. It's a love that runs so deep that she can't tap into it. It's just there.
She knows that he feels the same way. Because after Thor and Loki disappear in a flash of light and after Stark and Banner drive off in the distance and Rogers walks away, it's just her and Clint.
He takes off his glasses. "We could disappear too, you know." He says.
She knows. If they really wanted to, they could drop of the grid. Wipe their slates clean. Start over.
Together.
"I know."
"You're never going to wipe out the red and neither am I."
She knows that too. "What, and sit on a beach all day and drink fancy cocktails?"
"I'd take a good drink over aliens."
She knows that it's a lie. Clint would never really be happy with that. "You and I both know that's not true."
"Maybe not."
And so they carry on. But sometimes she thinks about what life would be like if they had disappeared. If they were just Tasha and Clint, another couple on an island vacation. Or if they were Natasha and Clint. Normal couple living normal, mundane, lives.
Sometimes she wishes that dream was her reality.
