"How did this happen again?" Isane huffed, poking the back of Kenpachi's somewhat distended neck. The only sign of pain he was willing to give was a noncommittal grunt at her pointed fingering.

Kenpachi, as usual, was mum on everything. Isane found it extraordinary how quiet he was, at least with her, though she certainly wasn't about to ask why he was so suddenly taciturn when submitting to her ministrations. Isane wasn't sure she'd live very long past that sort of conversation with Zaraki Kenpachi-taicho.

Isane slapped a bottle of painkillers—she was sure Kenpachi wasn't using them; he probably thought it was beneath his dignity as a man, or something, but whatever—into his hand and, after that unexpected display of boldness, she quailed slightly.

Kenpachi had a remarkably good poker face when he was grinning like Death itself at people. She couldn't tell whether he was contemplating killing her or not.

However, she was the doctor in this situation and she wasn't going to let her patient—however intimidating he was, even if he wasn't trying to be—get the better of her. Isane straightened, didn't put on a stern expression—she didn't think she could quite manage that.

"If the pain becomes a hindrance, simply take two of the pills—and not with alcohol—Zaraki-taicho."

He nodded. "'Kay. Thanks, Kotetsu," he rumbled in his usual gruff voice, and walked straight out the door, seeming unusually abashed.

The moment he left, Isane allowed herself a strangely girlish smile.

Others might call her crazy, but she knew there had to be a reason as to why Kenpachi was suddenly allowing her to look after his injuries at all.

And there was certainly a reason as to why he had come into the hospital, demanding to be treated by her, fifty-seven times in the past month, complaining of the exact same whiplash injury every time.
