The room materialized around Castiel, dated wallpaper, musty smells, and soft snoring from behind his back. He turned to see Sam and Dean Winchester sleeping soundly in their hotel beds. Sam was curled on his side while Dean was sprawled on his stomach, blankets half hanging off. In his haste to speak to Dean, Cas had not considered the hour and the likely possibility that the brothers would be asleep. He was about to shake Dean awake when he stayed his hand. Perhaps it was better to let him sleep considering how little rest he allowed himself. The message he had for the Winchesters was of import, but could wait until they had awoken the next day.
Cas stood over Dean for a few more moments, then strode over to the table and chairs near the hotel door and sat down. This wouldn't be the first time he watched over the Winchesters while they slept; he actually did it quite often these days with Crowley growing less and less fond of the three of them. Cas knew that Sam and Dean was not exactly keen on him acting as their nighttime guardian, but the brothers did not know what was best for their own safety. As if to prove his point, the doorknob to the hotel room rattled quietly. Cas stood and leaned over the table to look outside between the window blinds. Two men who also happen to be demons were working on the lock.
This struck Castiel as odd, since even a lesser demon could kick down a locked hotel room door. These two were assassins and were planning on neutralizing the Winchesters while they slept. "Cowards," Cas whispered roughly as he willed his form to materialize behind the two killers. They had barely uttered a word of surprise before he had placed a palm on either demon's forehead and burned the darkness out of them. The now empty bodies crumpled into a heap at his feet. Cas sighed heavily as he lifted both men by their collars, and materialized over the ocean to dispose of the carcasses. The tacky wallpaper was manifesting around him again when he heard his name being shouted.
"Dammit Cas! What did I tell you about watching us sleep? It's creepy!" Dean grumbled loudly, waking up Sam who was squinting at the pair of them.
Cas had the explanation for his presence on the tip of his tongue. Dean, I watch over you and Sam for your own safety. Dean, two demons were just breaking into your room. Dean, I just killed the two demon assassins that would've finished off you and Sam while you slept. Dean, I just saved your lifeā¦but he couldn't say it. He could never fully explain himself. All he could say to Dean was "I'm sorry."
