note; This kinda sorta wrote itself in the span of half an hour. So it's half an hour late.
But whatever.
HAPPY '08, EVERYBODY:)

"What is wrong with you?"
Roxas looked up from his spot on the floor, his sudden movement causing bits of potato chip to slide off of his shirt and onto the carpet. "What do you mean 'what's wrong with me'?" he asked, deeply insulted by his friend's outburst.
Hayner rolled his eyes and grabbed the greasy remote from Roxas' hand, turning off the crappy excuse for entertainment that flickered on the television screen. The room was abruptly sealed in darkness until Hayner fumbled for the light switch. Immediately, the harsh yellowish glare coming from the ceiling fan overhead illuminated broken remnants of food that littered the area and a very sorry, very lonely looking Roxas.
It was all too pathetic, really.
Which his precisely what Hayner told him.
"This is pathetic. You are pathetic."
"Why thank you," Roxas said sarcastically, reaching over to turn the TV on manually, until his hand was promptly hit by a rather large camouflaged sneaker. "Why'd you have to kick me?!"
"Roxas, I'm your best friend. It's New Year's Eve. Best friends don't let other best friends sit around like bums on New Year's Eve." Hayner folded his arms across his chest and gave him the look. Roxas hated that look.
"Go die. Now."
"Not until you leave this house."
"If I leave the house, then will you die?"
"It all depends on whether or not you talk to the girl currently waiting for you at the clock tower."
The blue-eyed boy jumped to his feet. "A girl?! You're setting me up?! Again?!"
"Whoa, there are only so many question marks in the world, buddy," Hayner said, a smug grin on his face. "Yes, a girl. Although if you'd prefer a guy, I'm sure Axel would –"
"Hayner, I am not leaving to meet a girl. In case you have forgotten, those blind dates you've set me up on have never gone well." This was an understatement, both young men knew.
Firecrackers popped in the distance, followed by cheers and giddy (if slightly drunken) laughter. Roxas briefly wondered what Kairi and Yuffie were up to, and how much trouble they were getting in. God, if he had to bail those two out of jail again…
"You don't have to meet anyone. You already know her."
This puzzled the antisocial boy with the curiously spiked hair. What?
Hayner took advantage of this stunned silence to drag his friend out of the room and into the open doorway, "C'mon, dorkwad. It's five minutes to midnight, and she's waiting for you. It's not gentlemanly to keep a lady waiting."
It took every inch of Roxas' self control to not punch Hayner out right then and there.
That, and the fact that most of the town would have witnessed the event.
By the time the pair had arrived at the clock tower, the countdown was already taking place. 30, 29, 28…
"Hello, Roxas. I'm glad to see you decided to join us."
Olette.
22, 21, 20…
A camera flash went off, and Roxas turned to find Pence tossing him a knowing smirk behind the lens.
16, 15, 14…
Green eyes danced in the brilliant hues of the fireworks above them, and a shy smile graced her features as she took a step closer.
10, 9, 8…
Roxas felt his face grow hot, despite the distinct chill of the late December air.
5, 4, 3…
"Happy New Year, Roxas."
2, 1…
And as the sound of reckless shouts rained around the two, Roxas thought he heard "You owe me fifty munny" thrown into the mix, but he found it hard to concentrate as his eyes slid shut and lips brushed his; only one cohesive sentence was able to surface before he surrendered completely.
Hmm. Maybe I won't kill Hayner after all.
