Kiss at Midnight

"It's freezing," Rose hissed. She scowled at nothing in particular. Mack put his arms around her. "T-thank you," she mumbled into his chest.

"Do you know what time it is?" Mack asked casually.

"About e-eleven, I-I think. W-why?" Even though she was considerably warmed by her boyfriend, it was still cold enough for her to shiver,

"Wanna get out of here?"

Rose looked back into the club that Ronny had booked and filled with what seemed like everyone in San Angeles. "Yes," she answered as she looked back at Mack. "Let me go find my coat so I don't get frost bite."

She laced her fingers through his and returned to the club, instantly warmed by the huge crowds of dancers. Thankfully, someone had hung up her black wool coat, making it easy to find. She put it on, slipped gloves on over her hands, and wound a fuzzy pink scarf around her neck. "Ready."

"A walk in the park?" Mack suggested as they got into his car.

"Anywhere but here would be great," Rose replied. Mack smiled to himself. This was working perfectly.

He drove them to the big park in San Angeles' downtown. They went in through the west entrance, heading along the path towards the center. Glancing at his watch, Mack saw that he only had ten minutes left before his plan would fall apart. "A quick walk."

"It'll warm us up faster," Rose reasoned, logical as ever. She quickened her pace.

"I love you, Rose. You know that, right? You know how much you mean to me?"

She smiled up at him, that lovely smile that made her even prettier than she already was. "I know, Mack. I've always known."

They were nearing the center fountain now. "And we're always going to be together, right?"

Rose laughed softly. "Is there something going on that I don't know about, Mack?"

Then Rose caught sight of the fountain, lit up by strands of soft golden lights. A justice of the peace was waiting…and Mack was on one knee opening a small box. "Will you marry me?"

"Yes," Rose whispered, thinking with her heart instead of her mind. "I will marry you, Mack," she said to a huge smile from Mack. He held out the box.

"It's just a wedding ring…we're not having much of an engagement. It's a family heirloom, though…"

"I love it. It's beautiful."

"You know, I am paying this guy extra to freeze out here…"

She pulled him after her. "You're so sweet, Mack. This is wonderful."

"Honey, let the man do his job," Mack teased.

They were married as a clock struck midnight somewhere in the distance. Mack kissed his bride like he'd been separated from her for years. "Happy New Year."

"Happy New Year."
